If a style of music goes out of vogue, someone will likely try to make it popular again (or at least make it more plentiful). That's why the music world has seen a Dixieland revival in the '50s, a rockabilly revival movement in the late '70s and early '80s, and a power metal revival movement in the '90s and 2000s. Thrash metal's peak years were the '80s and early '90s, and the fact that Blood Tsunami named this 2007 release Thrash Metal indicates that the Norwegian band would love to see a big thrash revival movement in the early 2000s. But there's a twist: Evil Pete, Blood Tsunami's lead singer/founder, doesn't sound like the frontman for an '80s thrash band -- he sings with the type of sinister, straight-from-hell rasp that black metal is known for. In terms of riffs and song structures, however, Thrash Metal definitely owes a lot to '80s thrash as well as early death metal. The influence of Slayer (who are considered both thrash metal and death metal), Exodus, Death and other bands that came out of the '80s is hard to miss. So Thrash Metal is basically a thrash metal/death metal album that has a black metal vocal style but not black metal's riffs, song structures, harmonies or blastbeats. Former Emperor member Bård Eithun, aka Faust, is Blood Tsunami's drummer, but his playing on this album is strictly in the thrash/death metal vein -- not the black metal vein. Overall, Thrash Metal is decent; none of the material is exceptional, but the disc is still an intriguing demonstration of the way a band can obsess over '80s thrash metal and early death metal while having a raspy lead vocalist who wouldn't be out of place in a black metal band like Marduk or Dark Funeral. ~ Alex Henderson

Thrash Metal album
$13.49 In many cases, it is a waste of time for rock bands to re-record a bunch of older songs they are known for; unless the new studio versions really put a fresh or different spin on something, what is the point? But Thrash Anthems is among rock's more noteworthy albums of re-recordings. This 72-minute CD finds German thrash metal veterans Destruction revisiting 13 songs they recorded in the past, including a lot of favorites from the '80s. "Deposition (Your Heads Will Roll)" and "Profanity" (both respectable) are new songs, but every other track on this album (which was recorded in 2006 and released in the U.S. in early 2007) is a re-recording of previously released tunes -- and serious, longtime Destruction fans will recognize "Bestial Invasion," "Mad Butcher," "Curse the Gods," "Invisible Force," and other favorites that the band's 2006 lineup revisits. Although most of the songs are familiar, Thrash Anthems is not a best-of in the true sense; albums of re-recordings are not really best-ofs, and casual listeners would be better off with a true best-of by Destruction. Thrash Anthems is more appropriate for the truly serious, genuinely hardcore Destruction fans -- the folks who could never be satisfied having just one or two Destruction CDs in their collections -- and those hardcore fans will find that while these re-recordings don't necessarily improve on the original recordings, Thrash Anthems is not a bad listen at all. In many cases, the main difference between the re-recordings and the original versions has to do with the 2006 production; a thicker production style makes many of the songs sound heavier and denser than before, although some longtime fans will miss the rawness of the original versions. Also, it should be noted that ...

| | Onslaught Killing Peace CD (2007)
Thrash Metal music CDs
$13.49 Metal historians have offered a long list of possible reasons why, in the '80s and early '90s, British thrash metal/speed metal veterans Onslaught were not as well known as Slayer, Metallica, Testament, Megadeth, Anthrax or Exodus -- and those reasons range from uneven, inconsistent albums to inadequate promotion to lineup changes to less than stellar production. Whatever the reason (or reasons), most of those headbanger historians naturally assumed that Onslaught would never be heard from again after disbanding in 1991. But in 2005, Onslaught surprised metalheads by getting back together. That is, they surprised the metalheads who were actually familiar with their old '80s output; a lot of folks had never heard of them (especially on the U.S. side of the Atlantic Ocean). Killing Peace is Onslaught's comeback album and their first recording since 1989's In Search of Sanity, and there is nothing uneven or inconsistent about this CD; the material is excellent, the performances inspired, crisp and undeniably focused. Onslaught's sound on this 2007 release is best described as '80s-style thrash metal/speed metal with a strong Slayer influence, a healthy appreciation of Judas Priest and hints of death metal. None of the forceful, hard-hitting tunes (which are obsessed with Satanism, war and the Occult -- much like Slayer) are even slightly groundbreaking by 2007 standards, but all of them are executed with plenty of conviction. If one needs a sports analogy, Onslaught come across like veteran baseball players who never made it to the major leagues but have done a lot of training and working out in recent years and are ...
| | Warbringer War Without End CD (2008)
Thrash Metal songs
$10.95 In case you hadn't heard the news yet, thrash is back! Yes, almost exactly 25 years after the genre's widely acknowledged "first shot" via Metallica's watershed Kill 'Em All album, in 1983 (it may not have been the only nor, technically, the first thrash record, but it was certainly the one that mattered!), thrash metal is finally making a significant comeback in its original, largely authentic form. Problem is, as of this writing, most of these young upstarts are merely managing to imitate original thrashers such as Slayer, Exodus, Death Angel, and, of course, Metallica, rather than using the sounds they pioneered to generate new potential classics all their own. That's where Los Angeles' own Warbringer bring hope into the picture, foisting a very impressive debut in 2008's Bill Metoyer-produced War Without End, that arguably comes closer than any other neo-thrash release to date to synthesizing numerous first-wave influences into a consistently exciting and fresh-sounding batch of songs. Check out quite stunning, high-speed moshers like "Total War," "Hell on Earth," and "Shoot to Kill," with their saber-toothed riffs, expertly sculpted solo attacks, and surprisingly memorable choruses (not to mention butt-loads of attitude), for proof. To be fair to the competition, Warbringer do borrow from Exodus quite a bit for fast-and-furious numbers like "Dread Command" and "Instruments of Torture," and another highlight, "At the Crack of Doom," clearly couldn't exist without Slayer's influence, but the song is so spectacularly crushing on its own merits, that it's easy to overlook this. And even though negligible ...

| | Edie Brickell & New Bohemians Stranger Things CD (2006) Digipak
Thrash Metal songs
$7.82 For the first time in over 10 years, singer-songwriter Edie Brickell has reunited with her band New Bohemians, returning to the musical backdrop of her 1988 chart-topper, "What I Am." While both "elements" of the equation have clearly grown since their heyday, in some ways STRANGER THINGS has a homey ambiance, a feeling as if band and singer had never been apart. While the enticing title song and wildlife/natural idyll "Buffalo Ghost" echo her earlier full-of-wonder, neo-flower child past, these Bohemians also get their groove on with the Afro-Cuban flavored "No Dinero." On "Elephants and Ants," Brickell explores a somewhat duskier, nearly smoldering vocal register while the lads engage in some tasty, jazz-inspired ...
