| | Chastain Countdown To Infinity CD Chastain Discography of CDs
You always knows what lies in store for you with each new release by David T. Chastain, and his 2007 solo effort, Countdown to Infinity is the perfect example -- guitar pyrotechnics from beginning to end. As a veteran shredder, Chastain's instrumental prowess has certainly wowed many a fellow metal guitarist over the years (specifically, those who favor precision over feel). And with Countdown to Infinity, Chastain turns back the clocks with an unmistakably `80s-sounding slice of instrumental metal (ŕ la such guitarists as Tony MacAlpine's and Greg Howe's shred-heavy releases for Shrapnel Records). While Chastain lets his fingers fly "("Attack of the Mechonrites,"" "Demonic Harmonic Justice Lullaby," etc.), he also focuses on creating metallic grooves as well ("Hands of Time," "Victim of the System," etc.). If you're looking for vintage-sounding shred metal, Countdown to Infinity will not disappoint. ~ Greg Prato

| | Whitesnake CD (1987)
Countdown To Infinity
$7.25 Prior to 1987, Whitesnake was little more than a cult heavy metal band in the U.S. Its previous album, 1984's SLIDE IT IN, sparked interest amongst headbangers, yet failed to deliver lucrative crossover success. But that all changed with its self-titled release that same year--by streamlining its early blues rock sound and incorporating obvious elements of Led Zeppelin and melodic pop, Whitesnake became one of the biggest rock bands of the late '80s.
The band caught a lot of flack for such Zep-derivative tracks as "Still of the Night" and "Crying in the Rain," but it was the pop hits "Here I Go Again" and "Is This Love" that put ...
| | Whitesnake Snakebite CD (1978)

$5.29 Snakebite barely qualifies as a Whitesnake album. Vocalist David Coverdale had just assembled the band, and in fact, half of the songs contained here had been recorded by the singer nearly a year before for an abandoned solo outing. With ...
| | Quill In Triumph CD (2006) Import
Countdown To Infinity
$22.25 Remember in the late '80s, when Led Zeppelin clones were at a premium (Kingdom Come, Bonham, etc.)? Well, although the Quill isn't as instantly smirk-inducing as some of the aforementioned bands, they definitely have studied their Zeppelin and other '70s-era classic rock records, as evidenced by their 2006 release In Triumph. After all, singer Magnus Ekwall certainly has Robert Plant's "cat in heat" vocals down pat, while guitarist Christian Carlsson has obviously studied Jimmy Page's guitar grandeur. Case in point, "Broken Man" sounds like it's straight off of Whitesnake's Slide It In, while the album-opening "Keep the Circle Whole" would have fit snuggly on the self-titled debut by Badlands. For fans of bands influenced by the mighty Zep, the Quill's fifth full-length release definitely aims to please. But you get the feeling that if In Triumph was released, say, in 1988 or 1989, the group would have challenged the likes of Great White for valuable MTV and radio space. In 2006, however, the album comes off as a bit of an anachronism. ~ Greg Prato

| | Moody Blues Every Good Boy Deserves Favour CD (1971) England; SACD Hybrid
Countdown To Infinity
$22.79 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Though this 1971 release was issued at a time of enormous commercial success for the Moody Blues, EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR contains some of the band's most adventurous music. The band had recently discovered the Moog synthesizer, and its presence is felt on much of the album. The opening "Procession" instantly sets this collection's experimental course, landing like a spacecraft among reams of cascading synthesizer before evolving into a soundscape of cricket chirps, thunderclaps, and tribal chanting. The next three minutes contain one of the most cathartic sonic explorations the band has ever put forth.
Other standout tracks include "After You ...
| | Dixie Dregs Industry Standard CD (1982)
Countdown To Infinity
$9.69 Although they dropped the "Dixie" from their name in 1981, Industry Standard is still basically what one would expect from the Dixie Dregs. It also proved to be the band's last album before they disbanded, with fans having to wait ten years for a reunion and a new record. This incarnation of the band is actually the strongest one musician-wise, with master fiddler Mark O'Connor (in his lone appearance as a Dreg) making strong solo and ensemble statements. O'Connor really gets to show off his stuff ...

Countdown To Infinity
$12.65 HEAD ON STRAIGHT was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album. "Take Me As I Am" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Performance by A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
Let's get one thing straight from the outset; no, Tonic is not Third Eye Blind or Matchbox 20. They have neither the secondhand-Counting Crows affectations of the former nor the whiny vocal presence of the latter. Like those bands, they do mix classic rock, alt-rock, and straight-up pop in equal measure, and they do so in a winning way. The opening track "Roses" finds the trio (with drumming ballast provided by sideman supremo Joey Waronker) bursting out of the gate with all guns blazing, all post-grunge guitars and high-octane vocals. In contrast, "Count on Me (Somebody)" is an amiable pop-rock tune ...

Countdown To Infinity
$10.15 "Music for sweet people. That's what I call it." -- remco h."Garret Gengler (aka Tomorrow is Already Here) makes songs that crib light feathering motions of strings, keyboards, horns, and guitars berth by cozy seaside bass rolls and drum beats. His blend of country folk textures and soft pop tempos is very relaxing. In a world that mostly stresses people out, Gengler’s product is a remedy for feeling burned out and weary. - ABSOLUTEPUNK.NET"Simple songs, simply done... A keen ear for melody, Gengler populates most of his songs himself, a personal sketchbook of emotional ups and downs. The instrumentation is kept to a minimum throughout – a little bit of organ here a shimmering cymbal there – this is simple music for simple enjoyment. Nothing complicated or over done just a selection of fine songs that definitely reward repeated listens... ...
