Long-running British prog metal outfit Threshold return with their eighth album, providing yet more of what fans expect, along with a few minor changeups such as the unexpectedly funky beat propelling the early standout "Disappear" and the techno synths underpinning "Hollow." Singer Andrew McDermott has a clean, almost old-fashioned voice with perfect diction not only on the power ballad centerpiece "Pilot in the Sky of Dreams" but on those tracks that would normally require a rougher sound. Posh vocals or not, Dead Reckoning is of that aggressively tasteful school of metal that never breaks into full-on showboating excess or noisy violence. It's metal for people who wish Marillion had occasionally gone into Dio territory, or that Talk Talk and Queensr’che had collaborated. Those outside that target demographic will likely remain unimpressed. ~ Stewart Mason Threshold Dead Reckoning Songs | 1. | Slipstream |

| Dead Reckoning Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Fantastic... This is fantastic prog metal. Threshold is in top form, and the riffs and hooks don't stop flying at you. I wasn't thrilled with the previous album Subsurface (it was okay in my book), but this album is perhaps the best Threshold album to date, no exaggeration. Good Album except for the 80's vibe. Threshold have created a very good album with "Dead Reckoning." The musicianship is top notch and it has excellent production. Also, it contains good songwriting. But, for me I just don't dig the 80's vibe that permeates through this disc. Mac Mcdermott is a very capable vocalist, but that "feel", at times I hear Bon Jovi and another 80's vocalist that I can't remember, and imo, it doesn't work. That being said, this is a worthy addition to a cd collection. Submitted by dwest1810 (Pittsburgh,Pa.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
not their best, not their worst This will grow on you after a few listens though the first reaction is nothing new. The latest additon is a few "growls" which, in my opinion, takes away the serious intent of the band. I do not think there is much similarity to Dream Theater; they are actually closer to Vanden Plas, which the record company claims them to be. Either way, it is worth the 13 bucks!! Mac's last is their best ... Threshold's signature sound comes from Mac's unique vocals. This CD is truly their most melodic & yet still progressively heavy. Play it more than once & really get into it ... If this CD does not grow on you, then you should be listening to the Partridge Family. Mac ... please come back !!! Genious Amazing! This album really surprised me.
It must be one of the best albums of 2007 if youre in to progressive metal.
Song of the year is Pilot in the sky of dreams. Submitted by per-olov.engvall (Sundsvall, Sweden) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Firebird: Bill Steer . Personnel: Bill Steer (vocals, guitar, harmonica, keyboards, percussion); Berno Paulsson (keyboards, percussion); George "Jolle" Atlagic (drums). Recording information: Berno Studios, Malmo, Sweden. In a career which, at least thus far, has hardly been worthy of great distinction within retro-rock circles, the horrendous, kindergarten-level drawing gracing Firebird's third album -- 2003's imaginatively titled No. 3 -- certainly doesn't bode well for potential improvements. But, surprisingly, improvements are indeed the order of the day for guitarist Bill Steer's post-Carcass enterprise come this lucky album number three. Perhaps it was the arrival of what one hopes will be a permanent rhythm section (bassist Roger Nilsson and drummer George Atlagic stepping in for Leo Smee and Ludwig Witt -- on loan from Cathedral and Spiritual Beggars, respectively); perhaps it was the right time, but, whatever ...

For their third album of traditionally styled qawwali music, the two nephews of the late great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (and his anointed successors) continue to mature and define their style. The songs, a mix of the ancient and the modern, are all love songs in praise of the deity, as befits the music of Sufi mysticism. But thankfully neither Rizwan nor Muazzam ...
