Although they released three full albums, a number of EPs and a seemingly endless stream of compilations, Soft Cell will always and forever be known as "the duo who did 'Tainted Love'." This obscure R&B single, given a techno-trash workover by singer Marc Almond and keyboardist Dave Ball, was an enormous hit on both sides of the Atlantic and has been revived endlessly ever since its 1982 release. From his fertile early-'70s Celtic soul-man period, this 2-disc set presents Morrison as one of the premier re-interpreters of American roots music. In photos, Lord Creator (Kendrick Patrick) resembles the young Cab Calloway, and that sort of old-style charm extends to the 17 songs here. Where most reggae stars took their initial inspiration from Otis Redding and other American soul singers, Lord Creator sounds as though he was at least equally influenced by pre-rock jump blues shouters like Louis Jordan and smooth harmony vocalists such as the Ink Spots or the Mills Brothers.
Lord Creator also mostly eschews the political aspects of much reggae.
