The 1968 debut by Canterbury's legendary Soft Machine introduced a spirited new breed of progressive pop musicians, one that was as influenced by free jazzers and folk purists as it was by the Beatles. Where many British prog musicians were po-faced wankers, the Softs brought a pervasive new sense of adventure and fun to the arena.
Drummer Robert Wyatt, bassist/guitarist Kevin Ayers, and multi-instrumentalist wizard Mike Ratledge were bound by few constraints in terms of their interests and influences. However, like many debut efforts by progressive bands, VOLUME ONE occasionally seems a bit tentative in spots, with the band's more experimental explorations somewhat hampered by conventional song structures. The glorious exception is Ayers' classic "Why Are We Sleeping?," possibly the first English prog classic. VOLUME ONE sounds positively fascinating, especially in light of the Soft Machine's later work.
A wild, freewheeling, and ultimately successful attempt to merge psychedelia with jazz-rock, Soft Machine's debut ranges between lovingly performed oblique pop songs and deranged ensemble playing from drummer/vocalist Robert Wyatt and organist Mike Ratledge. With only one real break (at the end of side one), the songs merge into each other -- not always smoothly, but always with a sense of flair that rescues any potential miscues. Wyatt takes most of the vocals, and proves himself a surprisingly evocative singer despite his lack of range. Like Pink Floyd's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Volume One was one of the few over-ambitious records of the psychedelic era that actually delivered on all its incredible promise. ~ John Bush
The classic 1968 debut from these British legends. Emerging from London's UFO Club scene at the same time as Pink Floyd, The Soft Machine was a near perfect merging of psychedelic rock, jazz, pop and avant-garde stylings. Featuring the trio lineup of Rob

Soft Machine album
$6.55 SHOOT OUT AT THE FANTASY FACTORY is the second of Traffic's expanded line-up studio albums, following 1971's THE LOW SPARK OF HIGH-HEELED BOYS. The five extended pieces here have little in common with the pastoral, psychedelic folk-pop of Traffic's first four albums, betraying instead Steve Winwood's roots in the Spenser Davis Group and foreshadowing his later solo success in the '80s. Traffic toured constantly before recording FANTASY FACTORY, and the album's extended grooves are clearly born of these performance experiences.
The band's rhythm section was the famed Muscle Shoals Studio bass and drums team of David Hood and Roger Hawkins. But the character of the songs does not depend solely on rhythm. This material is highly inventive and memorably melodic, showcasing Winwood's passionately soulful singing. ...
| | Santana Caravanserai CD (1972) Remastered
Soft Machine CD music
$7.59 Though there were hints of jazz fusion on Santana's first three albums, 1972's CARAVANSERAI introduced a dramatic shift in the band's sound, away from essentially pop-based music to a freer, more harmonically complex jazz/rock hybrid. In addition, the record marked a splintering of the original Santana lineup (soon to splinter further still with the departure of organist Gregg Rolie and guitarist Neal Schon, who then formed Journey).
Seemingly unconcerned with the pursuit of hit singles, guitarist Carlos Santana and crew here turn in an exquisitely moody disc of mostly instrumental jamming with a brooding intensity akin to Miles Davis's classic BITCHES BREW, underscored by the San Francisco-based ensemble's trademark propulsive rhythms. The new approach reaches its apex on ...
| | Gram Parsons Complete Reprise Sessions CDs (2006) Remastered; Boxed Set
Soft Machine music CDs
$24.29 Taking the place of the obligatory cd two-fer of GP and GREVIOUS ANGEL, Gram Parsons's THE COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS covers it all and then some for Grampires of all stripes. Produced by Emmylou Harris and Parsons cohort James Austin, this beautifully designed three-disc set includes one disc devoted to each solo record and a third featuring outtakes from each album's sessions. With fewer overdubs and Gram and Emmylou's vocals front-and-center in the mix, the final disc brims with the emotive soul and earthbound angelic vocals the two perfected. Among the final discs many highlights are looser alternate takes of "She" and "Streets of Baltimore" from GP and a "Hickory Wind" unadorned by the ridiculous fake crowd noise that mars the GRIEVOUS ANGEL version. The latter is the best and most stirring recorded performance of Parsons's signature song and alone worth the box's sticker price. Other features scattered on the first two discs ...
| | Roger Daltrey Daltrey CD (1973) (Import) Bonus Tracks; England; Remastered; United Kingdom
Soft Machine songs
$13.15 Although Roger Daltrey was by no means the first member of the Who to take the solo plunge (both John Entwistle and Pete Townshend beat him to the punch), he was the first to make any kind of commercial impact. While "Giving It All Away" peeled off his self-titled debut album to hit the U.K. Top Five, the album itself went Top 50 in America and, almost as an afterthought, introduced the writing talents of the young and then-unknown Leo Sayer to the public at large. Eight months ahead of his own breakthrough hit, "The Show Must Go On," Sayer and writing partner Dave Courtney composed eight of Daltrey's ten tracks; Courtney co-produced the album with Adam Faith, then wrote the remaining pair with Faith himself. Of Sayer's contributions, both "Giving It All Away" and the opening "One Man Band" would subsequently reappear on his own Just a Boy album, itself titled for the chorus line of "Giving It All Away." Daltrey's majestically plaintive rendition remains the definitive version, however, all the more so when linked with the "It's a Hard Life" lament that serves as prelude to the song on Daltrey. Far from the rocking bombast for which the ...

Soft Machine album
$9.59 Recorded live at the Harlem Square Club, Miami, Florida on January 12, 1963. Includes liner notes by Peter Guralnick.

| | Martina Mcbride Way That I Am CD (1993)
Soft Machine album
$6.05 "Independence Day" was nominated for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.
Martina McBride has been a performer ever since she was a child, touring with her musical family, a la The Partridge Family. But all those years on the road obviously came in handy, because on her sophomore album, THE WAY THAT I AM, McBride exudes the vocal confidence of a pro.
If this album was her breakthrough, then the bouncy, infectious pop ditty, "My Baby Loves Me," was her smash-through single. She followed it up with the urgent "Life #9" and anthemic "Independence Day," her assertive stance on abuse. The opening rockabilly "Heart Trouble" offers the proper introduction to the nice acoustic edge permeating the album.
Vocally potent throughout, McBride glides through rock, pop, ballad, rockabilly, and blues. If there are any doubts about McBride's vocal stylings, check out the bluesy ballad "Where I Used To Have A Heart." Without knowing, it could easily ...

| | Monty Guy Infinite Embrace CD (2005)
Soft Machine songs
$9.55 "INFINITE EMBRACE" is the new CD by MONTY GUY. It shows growth, development, and maturity;with a touch of humor. The album represents a challenging and polished musical project with its pleasing collection of classically tinged, yet original, popular melodies. The song selections are a combination of vocals and instrumentals. The production quality is outstanding. The art concept and presentation (packaging and disc) are tasteful and attractive...it just looks real nice! The album's strength is its originality; while the song arrangements show dedication to, and a genuine love of sound, song, and the beauty in music. The album begins with MONTY's tongue in cheek R & B flavored lamentation about the trials and frustrations of expressing burgeoning love at a date's home; while he sings of his obvious disappointment because her "Daddy's Sitting Here". Notwithstanding appropriate respect being given in the circumstances, it's tough to 'work' under such conditions, suggests MONTY. This song was included in the 48th GRAMMY AWARDS LIST as BEST MALE R&B VOCAL PERFORMANCE. The next song "Open For Love II (Overdrive)" is a spicy uptempo orchestral re-arrangement of a song he introduced as a warm, tasteful, though reserved groove earlier in his career. This is an example of his artistic maturity. He sings of having found a new love interest at two in the morning in the diner where he worked. While being smitten, hypnotized, and losing his heart when she walked in through the doorway, he earnestly confesses that his heart was "Open For Love". Unfortunately, although she placed an order, he was not pleased to learn that his "menu wasn't what she was thinking of". Consistent with other songs in the MONTY GUY catalog, the energetic "INFINITE EMBRACE" delivers intellectually stimulating compositions, displays elegant arrangements, and reflects a genuine love of music. "Your Love Saved Me Tonight" is a lovely, well constructed "crooner style" ballad that reveals MONTY's sensitivity d'amore and sensuous sincerity; while it exposes his penchant for embracing matters of the heart. These songs also uncover his determination to assiduously reflect on issues of love and emotional well being. This song was included in the 48th GRAMMY AWARDS LIST as SONG OF THE YEAR. "Ethereal Kiss" is a spirited instrumental with overt Brazilian influences. MONTY clearly enjoyed producing "INFINITE EMBRACE". The passion and mature musicianship are evident, as are the superb vocal control and artistic patience displayed during delivery on the mellow 'easy listening' ballad entitled "My Heart's One Desire", which was included in the 48th GRAMMY AWARDS LIST as BEST MALE R&B VOCAL PERFORMANCE. "Melody With A Swing" is accurately reminiscent of the 'big band era' style of instrumental orchestration which MONTY seems to love. The musicians of the ensemble ...
| | Bananarama True Confessions CD (1986) Bonus Tracks; England; Reissue
Soft Machine album
$9.79 1986's TRUE CONFESSIONS is Bananarama's transitional album. Though written and recorded in part with Tony Swain and Steve Jolley, the masterminds behind 1983's DEEP SEA SKIVING and 1984's BANANARAMA, the album's single, a cover of the Shocking Blue's "Venus," was the work of mid-'80s UK hit-makers Stock-Aitken-Waterman. That single-- the trio's first US #1-also inaugurated Bananarama's new, sexier, and more glamorous ...
| | Gadiz V & Bass G Sax Chemistry CD (2007)
Soft Machine CD music
$10.85 G&B: The Journey BeginsTake a moment, if you will, to allow your mind to wander back through time…back to 1992. The scene: Jakarta, Indonesia…the date: June 23. Just another warm, muggy day in the metropolis that is the largest city in South East Asia. Somewhere amidst all of the hustle and bustle, a young girl is born who will soon change the dynamics of the Indonesian music scene. Her full name is Gennoneva Gerardia Geacinta Gadiz Vania Sibbald…to the outside world, she will simply be known as Gadiz V…Fast forward, if you can, nearly two years to June 8, 1994…same city, same family, slightly different circumstances…a son is born. Before the millennium arrives, he will begin a journey that will also alter the musical landscape, becoming a force to be reckoned with. His given name is Sebastian Geraldo Bhaskara Putra Sibbald…to music lovers, he will be called Bass (pronounced Bozz) G…Together, they will become the dynamic recording duo known as G&B, one of the new wave of musicians coming out of Asia. The journey begins as we go back to the future…Coming from a family of musicians, it was no surprise they both took up music at an early age (G began playing the sax at age 7, B began when he was 6). It started with a school event they played together in 2001. From then on, G&B set out to conquer the music industry, first in their native Indonesia, then abroad. From 2002 to the present, G&B have thrilled audiences throughout Asia, playing venues in Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai and many other places. Some of their highlight shows include the Jazz Goes to Campus concerts in 2003 (alongside Gerry Herbs, Arief Setiadi and Bintang Indrianto, collectively known as the GAB Trio), 2004 & 2005 (backed by the G&B All-Stars). They were also featured at the Bali Jazz Festival 2005 and the Java Jazz Festival 2006.In 2003, a saxophone company in Indonesia branded and promoted the “G&B” label. The duo wanted to break the stereotype of the sax as being an instrument that could only be played by adults and only for a certain type of music, namely jazz. As the youngsters continued to improve, accolades began to roll in. In 2004, Museum Rekor Indonesia (the Record Museum of Indonesia, commonly called MURI) recognized Gadiz as the youngest female saxophonist in Indonesia. Not to be outdone, Bass (only ten years old at the time) was named youngest male, as well as the youngest professional saxophone player in Indonesia. He began performing professionally at the tender age of eight. Also in 2004, G&B had the opportunity to perform at a private dinner party to launch a new series of commemorative stamps depicting Indonesian flora. Surprisingly ...
