(1 Customer Review)
As evidenced by the cover picture, and song titles like "Mother Beautiful" and "Time For Livin'," this is one of the artist's mellowest sets, and his gift for assembling uniquely funky tracks is evident on the vintage-sounding "Loose Booty" and the sing-song "Can't Strain My Brain," which carries echoes of FRESH's "If You Want Me to Stay." There's also the fine doo-wop-era throwback of "This Is Love," with Little Sister's vocals recalling a more innocent era, and though the title track's attempts at cutesiness sound a little creepy, there's still enough of the old Sly in these grooves for diehard fans to latch on to.
First released in 1974, by which time the name Sly Stone had become a byword for missed shows and drug dependency, SMALL TALK nevertheless contains some sparks of life. The album's sound is very much in the FRESH mold, with tightly recorded bass and keyboards to the fore, while Stone's vocals, though increasingly wasted-sounding and bolstered by the Little Sister vocal group, still have moments of authority..
Sly & the Family Stone: Freddie Stone (guitar); Sid Page (violin); Pat Rizzo (flute); Jerry Martini (saxophone); Cynthia Robinson (trumpet); Vet Stewart, Rose Banks (keyboards); Sylvester "Sly Stone" Stewart, Rusty Allen (bass guitar); Bill Lordan (drums).
Down Beat (p.68) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]here's an overall reflective tone as Stone toys more with balladry." $7.65 The band is brash and palpably bursting with confidence, which may explain why Sly pulled a postmodern Beatles move, quoting "Dance to the Music" at the tag of the opening "Dynamite." (On the other hand, maybe Sly just had a thing for the Beatles--there's an "Eleanor Rigby" quote in "Plastic Jim.") Interestingly, despite the album's popularity, LIFE yielded no hit ...

$7.69 Though it failed to achieve the commercial success of its follow-up, DANCE TO THE MUSIC, Sly & The Family Stone's debut album established a precedent for a new blend of rock, soul, and funk. Small Talk CD music
$16.55 After the charm of Kaito's first disc won over the hearts of trance music naysayers and won favor with the hard-hearted ambient purists via the beatless version of the album, Kompakt began a mild onslaught of releases exploring the melodic, epic side of techno that bordered on progressive house/trance. Many of these records infused the spirit and romanticism of early Detroit releases with the dramatic arrangements of European electronic music from the early '90s. And while a few hit the mark dead on, there were others that never really captured the formula quite as well as Kaito. So with Hundred Million Light Years, Kaito retains that blueprint and expands further upon his musical vocabulary to keep things moving in a progressive direction (progressive in the evolutionary sense, not the stylistic). The album's opener "Color of Feels" and "Hundred Million Light Years" are reminiscent of Carl Craig's epic Landcruising record, as well as his "Dominas" remix of Maurizio, and is a wonderful reminder of Kaito's sense of arrangement and timing that made Special Life so addictive. The remainder of the album is equally as dramatic and engaging, and works well in a variety of settings. There's no sign of an ambient version of Hundred Million Light Years on the horizon, but it would definitely be a welcome exercise in listening ...

Small Talk songs
$10.15 Like a cross of the quirky edged art guitar thrust of Pavement, Television, or Wire with the brooding dark melodic intensity of Bowie or The Cure, Echo Revolution presents pop at its very best...going up into the clouds and taking a trip around, vocals swooping in from one side, cymbals washing, and then gears changing. Comprised of Lee Harding (vocals, guitar), Robin Eisenberg (keyboards, backing vocals), Andy Villas-Boas (bass guitar, backing vocals), ...
