Long before Willie Nelson and Jerry Jeff Walker were internationally renowned as country music "outlaws," there was Bobby Bare. From the early 1960s onward, Bare kept one foot stylistically in the Nashville mainstream and one foot decidedly out, drawing influence and repertoire from contemporary folk music and rock & roll. Bare's hallmarks are his smooth, deep, world-weary singing and his unassuming attitude, making you feel as if he's lived every song, yet forgoing any macho posturing.

This is the quintessential "Outlaw country" album. Waylon Jennings spent the early '70s working his way up to this rough-and-tumble masterpiece, arguably the finest album of his prolific career. Jennings was so taken with the songwriting of Nashville rowdy Billy Joe Shaver that he decided to record this all-Shaver album (with the exception of the Fritts/Seals-penned "You Asked Me To"), which helped put Shaver on the map as the poet laureate of the Outlaw set.

Little Rock is only Hayes Carll's second album, but already he sounds like a veteran singer/songwriter. His tales of drifters and searchers, full of sharp observations and biting wit, invite comparisons to Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, and Robert Earl Keen, while his talent has brought collaborations with Ray Wylie Hubbard and Guy Clark. For a Texas singer/songwriter, those are big shoes to fill, but the Houston native fills them admirably.
