This eight-CD box set, with about one-third previously unreleased material, sparks the beginning of a promising series of Neil Young ARCHIVES, and serves as a document of the heady exploration and growth that the beloved artist undertook between the innocent early 1960s and the explosive early '70s. The first CD preserves some early solo demos and his work with his teenage band the Squires, a Duane Eddy-ish enterprise that made the best of Young's nascent signature guitar style--simple, effective, dramatic. The second disc covers the Buffalo Springfield years, and includes two versions of the delicious "Flying on the Ground is Wrong." The rest is prime Young, from DEJA VU through HARVEST, with and without Crosby, Stills, and/or Nash, Stray Gators, and Crazy Horse. Album tracks mingle with previously unreleased mixes, demo versions, and sizzling live tracks, and the final disc contains the 1974 film JOURNEY THROUGH THE PAST replete with the original film trailer and other extras. Needless to say this is the most complete Neil Young collection currently available, and a must-have for fans, no matter what point of the journey they got onboard with Shakey.

A SPACE IN TIME was Ten Years After's biggest commercial success. The reasons are pretty obvious; Alvin Lee's songwriting had improved markedly and there was far more stylistic variety than on their previous albums. The big hit here was "I'd Love to Change the World," with its catchy acoustic guitar hook and the immortal opening line, "Everywhere is freaks and hairies." Other highpoints include: "Baby Won't You Let Me Rock 'n' Roll You," the band's first stab at Stones-style raunch (complete with a riff from Led Zeppelin); the country-ish romp "Once There Was a Time"; and the gently folky and surprisingly self-deprecating "Over the Hill," which features strings, a move that would have been unthinkable for this band a year or two earlier. Forget everything you ever thought was dull or ponderous about ambient music, as Boards of Canada return like Aeschylusian heroes -- unbound from a genre that often sounds like a washing machine begging for a swift kick. Pay attention, Radiohead. Boards of Canada traced a disturbed childhood in the arctic, austere Music Has the Right to Children, but here there's a slightly warmer feeling. More central, tweaked vocals add a new dimension to the "hard beats + bittersweet melodies" pattern of the past; songs like the gorgeous, ice-melting "Zoetrope" glide along on simple celestial glimmers without a single bassline in sight.
