Somewhere in Middle America, in a coffee bar, someone came up with a good idea. Unfortunately, this is not the case with our story here. Somewhere, someone came up the ingenious idea of taking Aussie hard rockers AC/DC's magnum opus, Back in Black, and doing a song-by-song tribute album. But not having just anyone cover these songs, oh no. What this album called for was a bunch of watered-down, no-talent aspiring DiFranco/Crow clones doing acoustic "reinterpretations." The results stop just short of being as thrilling as watching the OJ trial. Not only is this the worst conceptual nightmare since Baywatch Nights, it's one of the most under thought, poorly executed records of the modern age. Having these women perform these songs in a such a marshmallow, saccharine-coated, tea-sipping, let's-sit-around-the-campfire-and-talk-of-our-feelings way is not only sacrilege, it's just downright obviously wrong. Anyone with a shred of musical decency let alone common sense could easily recognize this fact (save ICP fans). Backed in Black strips away the feeling you got hit in the face with a cinder block and replaces it with a big oversized baggy wool sweater, a hot cup of chai, and warm hug from your best friend. Perhaps the Tuvan craze in world music is dying down a bit now, more removed from the flurry stirred up by Genghis Blues. There's still a fair bit out there to be heard nonetheless, with groups beyond the well-known Huun Huur Tu and Kongar-ol Ondar. Case in point is this album from Ay-Kherel, a troupe headed by Vladimir Soyan. The album progresses through the obvious khoomei to instrumental pieces and various folk songs, both in solo and ensemble formats. Much of the music is similar to what would be heard on other Tuvan albums, with some exceptions in execution. No one in this troupe is up to the same standards in throat singing as ol-Ondar, but they aren't bad. Susan B. Taylor is so excited about her debut "album" success that is beginning to get international airplay (US and Spain, soon Belgium and the UK)!!!In the US, "Memories Linger" airplay is on "The Shane Wilder Show." Shane was formerly costar with Clint Eastwood in the western "Rawhide" TV series and is now the program director for Trans-American Broadcasting Corp., said this per telephone on April 28, 2004 about Susan: "This new upcoming artist shines brightly with well-written material and strong vocals. Fine production makes this a winner!" Shane WilderActually, the CD was recorded in 1989, after RUSTY BURNS from 80s rock POINT BLANK fame agreed to produce her first CD. After minor success in the early 90s and paying back her debt to record the debut "album" released only on cassette back then, Susan as a single parent, decided to put her music career aside to raise her son "normally" off the road, eventually working in law as paralegal for ten years. (See Susan's "Mother at War" CD to learn something about her relationship with her son who had orders to be deployed into the Iraqi conflict. That CD is getting airplay alongside "Memories Linger.") Her son is doing well on his own, she is back strong again, loving her music career and businesses again, back into her music career again definitely not about to stop doing what she loves this time around! So after adding some vocal tracks, then remastering the project and re-releasing it January 31, 2004, you should know something about the project that is starting finally to get international airplay! Rusty Burns is the featured on lead guitar of course, he also played bass and programmed the drums, also was responsible for the instrumental arrangements. For those of you that aren't familiar with Rusty Burns, he is left-handed and plays guitar with the guitar upside down, creating a very unique guitar sound and style! His guitar style mixed with Susan's voice is mesmerizing but energizing to say the least.One playing of "Memories Linger" will not be enough!
