| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Spin 2 album
$17.79 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has been for about a decade, and there's no threat of the album becoming ponderous either as the economical tracklist and purposeful songs wipe away the sins of their previous album, 2005's ROSENROT. The ...
| | Taylor Swift Fearless CDs (2008) With DVD; Bonus Tracks; Special Edition
Spin 2 CD music
$13.99 Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, FEARLESS--which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on FEARLESS: she's soft-spoken and considerate, a big sister instead of a big star. Nowhere is this truer than on "Fifteen," a kind warning for a teen to watch her heart sung from the perspective of a woman who's perhaps twice that age--a sly trick for the 18-year-old Swift. There may be a hint of youthfulness to her singing but that's the only hint of girlishness here; her writing--and she had a hand in penning all 13 tracks here, with six of them bearing her solitary credit--is sharply, subtly crafted and the music is softly assured, never pushing its hooks too hard. Like many country-pop albums of the 2000s, the pop heavily outweighs the country--there aren't fiddles here, there are violins--yet the production never feels garish, a crass attempt at a crossover success. ...
| | Karl Shiflett & Big Country Sho Worries On My Mind CD (2003)
Spin 2 music CDs
$13.89 From the first bit of fiddling on Worries on My Mind, Karl Shiflett and company seem to know what they're about. The guitar, banjo, and dobro jump right in, followed by Shiflett's backwoods vocals and a distinct blend of harmony on each chorus. Some would just call it old-fashioned bluegrass and leave it at that, but there's a flavor that strikes a well-met balance between Jimmy Martin and blues-flavored country. Andy Ruff's dobro occasionally sounds like a laptop steel out of an old Hank Williams song, and a number of banjoist Jake Jenkins' songs mine the honky tonk terrain like there's no tomorrow. "If I Could Take You Home" is a rousing ode to true love and infidelity, while "Turn Around" will make the listener long for an old scratchy Ernest Tubb record. Even the instrumentals -- "Bobo's Boogie" and "Hoss Fly" -- impress, and the band's cover of "I Still Miss Someone" is raggedly fresh. The odd track out is "How Wrong a Man Can Be," sung by Jim Lauderdale. It isn't a bad song, and Lauderdale's a fine singer, but his style seems much more modern than Shiflett's. It's easy to get the impression ...
