| | Serge Gainsbourg Histoire De Melody Nelson CD (1971) With Book; Deluxe Edition
Adieu Joli Candy
$13.79 Brimming with lust, drama, and dark humor, HISTORIE DE MELODY NELSON is widely acknowledged as Gainsbourg's masterpiece. The 1971 release was criminally ignored outside France-despite the godfather of French pop's decade of cutting-edge songwriting. It's now something of a cult classic, and artists as diverse as Air, Nick Cave, and Portishead have all cited the album as an influence.
Don't be put off by the "concept album" tag. There are no goblins here. Instead, Gainsbourg concentrates on his favorite subjects-sex and death. The story line concerns a chance meeting between a middle-aged man and a teenage girl that develops into a passionate affair. Never one to shy away from controversy, Gainsbourg plays his character with consummate sleaze. Remember, this ...

| | Vas Feast Of Silence CD (2004)
Adieu Joli Candy
$11.79 On the fourth album from Vas, vocalist Azam Ali and her partner, multi-instrumentalist Greg Ellis, have moved away from the sparse musical arrangements of their past and have introduced a new, elaborate sound that incorporates every instrument in the world beat library. Often favorably compared to Dead Can Dance and Axiom of Choice, Vas evolves its sound on FEAST OF SILENCE in a way that's sure to please fans and introduce the duo to a whole new audience. Guitar, bass, and other instruments have been added to their signature mix of cello, world beat percussion, and Indian flute. In addition to the expansion of the instrumental repertoire, the music on FEAST OF SILENCE shows Middle Eastern and Eastern European influence in their compositions. "Bardo" is a particularly unusual track ...
| | Steel Pulse True Democracy CD (1982) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Adieu Joli Candy
$9.29 This 1982 release, Steel Pulse's first for Elektra, marks the band's move toward a more buoyant, pop-inflected sound. TRUE DEMOCRACY does not have the edgy roots feel of albums like HANDSWORTH REVOLUTION; instead, it demonstrates the group's synthesis of reggae rhythms with high production values and well-crafted melodies. But while the album's stylistic corners may be sanded for radio-ready accessibility, TRUE DEMOCRACY contains some of the band's boldest, most explicitly political songwriting.
The opener, "Chant a Psalm," invokes the names of biblical figures and puts the listener on notice of the album's conscious, spiritually minded tone. There are classic Rasta themes, such as "Worth His Weight in Gold," a song based on the teachings of Marcus Garvey, and songs that overtly address social and political issues. "A Who Responsible?" takes on the history of racial injustice, "Leggo Beast" is an indictment of prostitution, and "Man No Sober" looks at alcoholism. Yet for all its seriousness, TRUE DEMOCRACY has a light, danceable vibe, exemplified in the ...

| | John Coltrane Bethlehem Years CDs (1987) Remastered
Adieu Joli Candy
$16.39 Digitally remastered by Tom Moulton (Frankford Wayne Mastering Labs, New York, New York).
In the 1960's, John Coltrane challenged the very essence of what it means to play jazz. However, THE BETHLEHEM YEARS displays the genius of the reed man in his earlier years. In fact, this CD comprises three sessions, called simply A, B, and C, and all recorded in 1957, the year which marked the beginning of Coltrane's solo career.
THE BETHLEHEM YEARS finds this jazz legend shining with poise and virtuoso grace. Session A features what amounts to a big band, including Al Cohn and Freddie Green, best known for their work in the Count Basie Orchestra. Session B, consists of a beefed up version of the Jazz Messengers, including, of course, its inimitable leader, Art Blakey on drums, while on session C, we hear Coltrane with a quintet, again featuring Blakey on drums, but also spotlighting the piano skill of Walter Bishop Jr. Highlights ...

$12.69 Out of the bedroom and into the frying pan. On So Twice They Named It Nice, Jerry Fels and The Jerry Fels offers 10 songs that read like giving the world a thumb in the eye (I like to think of it more like a gentle nudge in the ribs). Also ten songs that celebrate (how shall I say it?) individuality, with a little more than ...
