| | Roy Hargrove Emergence CD (2009)
Blue Comedy album
$13.99 Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has been in some exotic musical environments in the past -- from his various quintets, quartets, his Afro-Cuban outfit Crisol, and his funk band the RH Factor, he's pretty much done it all. And while he's played in various big bands before, he's never led his own until now. Emergence on the Groovin' High imprint features a 19-member big band, playing a set of 11 standards and originals by Hargrove and bandmembers as well as a track written for the leader by none other than pianist Chucho Valdés -- who doesn't appear here. The roots for this project go all the way back to 1995 when Hargrove formed a big band to play the New York Jazz Festival. The group went through many metamorphoses when he played a series of club and festival gigs over the intervening years. The set begins with "Velera," a tune written and arranged by Hargrove. It's a ballad in modal style with extended harmonies and a lovely textural palette. The composer employs restraint to bring forth his gorgeous melody. It's followed by "Ms. Garvey, Ms. Garvey," written and arranged by baritone saxophonist Jason Marshall. It quotes liberally from "Wade ...

Blue Comedy music CDs
$12.09 Ramona Davies (who went simply by the stage name of Ramona) was for a time an attraction with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, as well as a solo act sponsored by Whiteman. A decent society-style pianist who sang with a deep voice, Ramona's most significant recordings were ones that featured some notable sidemen. This 24-cut CD from 1998 gives listeners the majority of her most interesting recordings, with brief contributions from such players as trombonist Jack Teagarden, trumpeters Charlie Teagarden and Bunny Berigan, and C-melody saxophonist Frankie Trumbauer. Among the better selections are Ramona's versions of "I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby," "You Excite Me," "Annie Doesn't Live Here Anymore," "Are You Makin' Any Money," "Barrel-House Music," "We're Out of the Red" and "Raisin' the Rent." Enjoyable, if not particularly essential music. ~ Scott Yanow

Blue Comedy CD music
$7.95 What people tend to forget about the original punk scene, both in the U.S. and across the world, is that punk was more of a state of mind and an attitude than a certain style of music. Sure, the music was generally stripped down rock & roll in its rawest form, but its implied message (no matter what the lyrics were) was "Anyone can do it, so go for it." Many bands did just that, and most of them barely made a local impression, let alone bothered any type of charts. Some of them understood what the punk ethic was all about, while others just aped whatever was fashionable at the time. Plenty of the bands actually got around to releasing at least a single, but a very small percentage of them actually released an album. The Products' 1981 debut Fast Music was one of those rare albums that came from the punk underground, but it didn't sound exactly like all the other bands on the scene. More the Velvet Underground than the Sex Pistols, the Products had a talented songwriter in Lee Larson, who sang like a young, pissed off Lou Reed, while the music complemented the mood by sounding menacing without being too aggressive and overpowering (was that by choice or by budget?). Sure, there was nothing Earth shattering here, but it made an impression on many listeners, including those at Cabeza De Tornado Records, which reissued it on CD in 2003 (although it does seem to be mastered from a cassette). ~ Steve "Spaz" Schnee

| | Bruce Brothers At Heart CD (2003)
Blue Comedy songs
$13.29 Jim & Dix's newest collection Brothers at Heart includes fifteen of their favorite songs and tunes, most of them traditional and in the "brother duet" style. Anyone who loves simple and straight-forward singing and picking will surely want to get a copy of this CD.The brother duet sound is like no other: basic acoustic guitar and/or mandolin accompaniment plus two voices. Simple, from the heart, without much extra decoration, but it gets you right to the roots of the music and to the message of the song. Jim & Dix have listened to and learned from the great country brother duet acts from the 1920s to the present (the Monroe Brothers, Jim and Jesse, the Louvin Brothers, the Dixon Brothers, the Lilly Brothers, the Everly Brothers, the Wilburn Brothers, the Osborne Brothers, the Stanley Brothers, the Delmore Brothers, the White Brothers, and so many more). Though Jim & Dix aren't brothers by blood, they are brothers at heart when it comes to the music.Dix and Jim are award-winning acoustic guitarists. Their concerts showcase beautiful vocal harmonies ("They sound like the Everly Brothers...with a lot more nitty gritty..." says Flatpicking Guitar Magazine) and ...
