This band of New York hippies is best-known for featuring the debut of Blondie's Debbie Harry. Their sole album originally appeared in 1968. A dreamy collection of psychedelic folkpop that perfectly captures the innocence and whimsy of the 1960s flower-power dream, it's an obligatory purchase for lovers of the Mamas and the Papas or sunshine pop in general, and is presented here complete with explanatory liner notes.

Recorded in 1968. Includes liner notes by Alan Robinson.

All tracks have been digitally remastered.

Various Artists/Wind in the Willows: Debbie Harry.

Skeleton-in-the-closet time: Here's Blondie's Debbie Harry back in her 1968 hippy period, working the Mamas and Papas folk-rock thing for all it's worth. She's strictly in a support role on these sides, and overall, this is about as lightweight musically as they come. Only Harry's name as a connection makes this worth a listen, out of curiosity and nothing else. ~ Cub Koda

Wind In The Willows: Peter Brittain, Paul Klein (vocals, guitar); Ida Andrews (vocals, flute, piccolo, bassoon, chimes); Wayne Kirby (vocals, piano, harpsichord, organ, vibraphone, double bass); Steve "Marvello" DePhillips (vocals, bass); Deborah Harry (vocals, tamboura, tambourine, finger cymbals).

Additional personnel: Artie Kornfeld (drums, bongos); Peter C. Leeds (bells).

Slayer World Painted Blood CD  (2009)

Wind In The Willows
CD $9.55  SALE 4.3 stars Top 50 Audio Samples
Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are short, no muss-no fuss blasts of double kick drum, minor key-riffing fury, with an unrelenting intensity that requires little in the way of sonic or textural variation. The title track, on the other hand, is a somewhat slower dose of classic chugga-chugga head-banging which showcases Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman's shrieking, emotive guitar work. Remaining true to Slayer's defiantly old school sound, WORLD PAINTED BLOOD carried the torch for pure thrash. Editor: Dan Monti. Photographer: Andrew Stewart. Personnel: Tom Araya (vocals); Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King (guitar); Dave Lombardo (drums). Audio Mixer: Greg Fidelman.

The finest example of perfect disco pop, and a record that should be prescribed to musical snobs and manic depressives. The album is a true ambassador of what pop music can be. Jackson whoops and dances through a suite of unforgettable melodies that should be danced to with a smile on your face. Each track offers at least one musical hook, whether it is the beauty of 'Human Nature' (who can resist the 'dada dada da da da') or the 'whoo whoo' of 'Billie Jean'. It's all too good. Principally recorded at Westlake Audio, Los Angeles, California. Additional Tracks Personnel includes: Michael Jackson (vocals, percussion); Paul McCartney (vocals); Vincent Price (spoken vocals); Steve Lukather (guitar, bass); Eddie Van Halen, Dean Parks, Paul Jackson (guitar); Larry Williams (flute, saxophone); Jerry Hey (trumpet, flugelhorn); Bill Reichenbach (trombone); David Paich (piano, ...

Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral instruments to add John Williams-like climaxes is intermittently successful, but the music is just as frequently stripped down to an unaccompanied piano or to just the rock band, and that works, too. The very occasional interruption of male death growls is less necessary; frankly, the band should just let Simons do her Sarah Brightman-esque thing and keep the riffs cranking behind her. If you like this sort of thing (Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, After Forever, Leaves' Eyes, etc., etc.), or if you're a big Andrew Lloyd Webber fan, this is exactly the sort of thing you'll like. ~ Phil Freeman 2009 release from the Dutch gothic metal band includes 13 tracks Lyricist: Amanda Somerville. Single Bullet Theory
Pamela Means Single Bullet Theory CD  (2003)

Wind In The Willows
CD $13.59
"If Black warrior poet/feminist political activist Audre Lorde had taken up folk singing, she might have attacked her guitar and wrapped her lyrics around it the way Pamela Means does."-Valley Advocate, Northampton MAPamela Means is a Boston-based Out (spoken), Biracial, independent artist whose kamikaze guitar style and punchy provocative songs have worn a hole in her guitar. Armed with razor wit poetry and irresistable charm, Pamela Means' "stark, defiant songs" (New York Times Magazine) set the status quo and the stage afire. Pamela's ardent commitment to interrogating social ills was fostered by her unique childhood experience. In Pamela's own words, "as the adoptive daughter of a white mother and black father, I learned about dismantling systems of oppression from the inside-out." Pamela received her first guitar at the age of fourteen, just after her mother died of cancer, and it soon became Pamela's primary vehicle for expression. It would also serve as a passport out of a life that consisted of poverty, foster homes, and the inner city life of hyper-segregated Milwaukee, WI. Pamela Means re-located to Boston, busked in the subway, founded a record label, and started touring. She now performs some one hundred twenty shows a year at clubs, colleges, coffeehouses, theaters and festivals, where she has been known to set album sales records, nationwide. Pamela has shared the stage with Ani DiFranco, Neil Young, Joan Baez, and Violent Femmes among others. Pamela Means has also been the recipient of several music awards and nominations in Boston and in her native Wisconsin.Pamela's 2003 tour took her nationwide, promoting her fifth self-released album, Single Bullet Theory (Wirl Records, 2003). A timely release, Single Bullet Theory confronts the USA Patriot Act, racial profiling, and the Bush Administration, while advocating for the rights of marginalized identities. Through the song "O.D.", "Means fires off what is easily one of the best musical summations of our current political situation.." (Bay Area Reporter, San Francisco, CA). Pamela also recorded a haunting version of "Strange Fruit". The album also showcases Pamela's innovative, expressive guitar style, evidentiary of her conservatory studies of classical and jazz guitar. The fruits of such discipline shine in her fleet-fingered fretwork, fluid phrasing, 'dizzying acoustic guitar riffs' (Boston Globe) and 'powerful songs' (Time Out NY) all of which place her at the vanguard of the new acoustic frontier. Spanning from Spanish-influenced rolling crescendos through the detuned growling guitar funk of an aggressive interrogation, Means is "redefin[ing acoustic] music.." (Washington Blade). Pamela Means "exhibits a rare emotional fire in today's folk world" (Seven Days, Burlington VT), so much so that Ani DiFranco exclaimed "You've got such a deep, deep groove, I can't get out. And I wouldn't want to." With Truth as ammunition, Pamela Means brings the fight for social justice and human dignity to the forefront of a new generation. ###PAMELA MEANS: SINGLE BULLET THEORYWIRL RECORDSWIRL1005-D(42m 07)Strolling through Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachussetts recently, my ears were tickled by some very tasty acoustic guitar picking and an exceptionally passionate voice drifting through the midday air. The sound was emanating from busker Pamela Means, and I stopped to listen. Excellent buskers are ten a penny in Cambridge, which is one of the biggest centres of folk music in the States. Every 60s folkie worth his/her salt played the coffee houses here, and it's where Tracy Chapman emerged from in the ...

Amy Ray Prom CD  (2005)

Wind In The Willows
CD $11.79  Audio Samples
Amy Ray, always the harder-edged half of the Indigo Girls, released her second solo effort, PROM, in 2005. Her first solo record, 2001's STAG, explored a tougher, rawer sound than her fulltime band is known for. More successful and consistent than its predecessor, PROM's 10 tracks of politicized punk pull from Ray's own experiences in high school--from the typical teenage road trips to the discrimination stemming from growing up queer in a Southern state--and feature a keen mix of wit, humor, anger, and frustration. When her raspy, earnest voice sings of a "new gender nation with a new desire" in the anthemic opener, "Put It Out For Good," it's easy to get swept along for the ride. Personnel: Amy Ray (vocals, guitar, electric guitar); Amy Ray; Katharine McElroy (vocals, keyboards, bass guitar); Hunter Manasco (guitar, electric guitar, hand claps, background vocals); Allen Bleyer, Donna Dresch (guitar); Donna Dresch, Jody Elizabeth Bleyle (electric guitar); Brandon Bush (keyboards, hand claps); Jody Bleyle (bass instrument); Will Lochamy, Will Lochamy (drums); Colleen Thompson, Les Nuby, Lester ...

While it seemed like it wasn't until the early '90s that the U.S. finally accepted annual rock festivals, they had been appearing regularly throughout Europe for decades. And one of the most enduring metal festivals overseas remained Wacken Open Air, located 50 kilometers northwest of Hamburg, Germany. For the most part, the majority of the bands that appear at Wacken are of the "underground" mold, but the 2004 lineup featured more renowned acts than usual, including such metal vets as Anthrax, Death Angel, Cathedral, Dio, and Motörhead, among others. Kicking things off is Anthrax, whose performances of "Indians" and "Only" signal what must have been one of the group's last performances with singer John Bush, who was replaced shortly thereafter by Joey Belladonna (the same chap Bush replaced in the first place). Other highlights include Dio blazing through the classic "Holy Diver," and Motörhead's latter-day favorite "We Are Motorhead." A few forgotten rockers make their return as well (ex-Iron Maiden frontman Blaze Bayley and Zodiac Mindwarp), but elsewhere, ...
