| | Lordi Arockalypse CD Lordi Discography of CDs
The early 21st century saw many new bands emerge that worshiped good-time, anthemic heavy metal from the '80s. The Darkness immediately come to mind, and also Finland's Lordi. Musically and visually modeled after such groups as Kiss, Alice Cooper, Twisted Sister, and W.A.S.P., Lordi caused a sensation by winning the 2006 Eurovision contest, which in turn made their third release, The Arockalypse, a hit throughout Europe. Fist-pumping metal with over the top theatrics abound throughout, especially on the album's Euro hit, "Hard Rock Hallelujah," as well as the oh-so-subtle "Bringing Back the Balls to Rock" and the power ballad "It Snows in Hell." Add special guest appearances by Kiss' Bruce Kulick, Accept's Udo Dirkschneider, and Twisted Sister's Dee Snider and Jay Jay French, and you have quite a headbanging rock & roll party. To sum it up succinctly, if GWAR actually wrote memorable songs, they would be quite a lot like Lordi. ~ Greg Prato
This special edition set includes a DVD of 3 music videos, live footage at the Market Square, and Hell Athens documentaries, as well as a CD of 15 tracks including 3 bonus tracks.Rolling Stone (p.74) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The one Lordi will be remembered for...is 'Hard Rock Hallelujah,' a bombastic tribute to rock & roll, complete with a demonic backing choir, Dio-like banshee wails and killer lines..." One of heavy metal's great lost bands resurfaces in this follow-up to its previous best-of collection, FIRST DAZE HERE. Based in Washington, D.C., Pentagram existed in various forms during the 1970s and '80s, never achieving anything but local recognition. This collection of demo and live recordings captures the band at its rawest, sounding surprisingly contemporary on cuts like "Wheel of Fortune," while "Show 'Em How" is a stunning display of unique blues power. The band displays its pre-Led Zeppelin roots with a cover of the Yardbirds' "Little Games," showing on "Yes I Do" that it also had pop smarts to spare, while "Virgin Death" is a masterly demonstration of its full-on metal skills. Though the band's first official album wouldn't be released for over a decade after they first formed, this criminally overlooked Virginia-based Pentagram was an indisputable pioneer of heavy metal. FIRST DAZE HERE, the first of two reissues of the seminal group's lost 1970s output, places the band in its proper historical context and provides a look at its formative stages. Pentagram is in perhaps a slightly less evil mode here, but as tracks such as "Forever my Queen" and "Review Your Choices" show, they are no less blistering, churning out heavy proto-doom that demands a devil horn salute from anyone listening. Ever wonder how it felt for blues historians to uncover the lost 78s containing Robert Johnson's timeless Depression-era recordings? Well, if there's a heavy metal equivalent to this experience, then First Daze Here may well be it. Yet another Pentagram collection gradually unearthing this once amazingly obscure band's rare singles and even rarer studio recordings, it's not the most comprehensive, nor is it definitive, but it boasts the best selection and certainly the best sound quality. Most of these tracks were recorded between 1973 and 1974 at various low-budget sessions in the Washington, D.C., area by the group's original lineup, and digital remastering has done wonders to resurrect their original power and ...
