BEST DAMN THING is the third full-length from pop chart upstart Avril Lavigne and shows the artist has lost none of the cheeky, bratty rock edge that put the singer on the map. The album's lead-off single, "Girlfriend," a bouncy pop-punk romp driven by pell-mell energy and a naggingly catchy chorus, is a case in point. "Girlfriend" kicks off the 12-song set with a bang, telling the listener in no uncertain terms that the album is going to be a fast, fun, high-octane ride.

Whereas Lavigne's sophomore release, UNDER MY SKIN, showed a more reflective side of the singer, BEST DAMN THING doesn't waste time navel-gazing or brooding about relationships gone wrong. Instead the album revels in punchy, uncomplicated pop delivered with a teenaged sneer (and a few well-placed curse words to keep the parents on their toes). Lavigne still seems a ways off from fully exploring her "mature" side, but this batch of energetic tunes is all the better for it. The best teen pop thrives on good hooks and youthful, devil-may-care attitude, and that's exactly what Lavigne delivers.

Recording information: Abbey Road, London, England.

Photographers: Deryck Whibley; Mark Liddell.

Arranger: Leon Pendarvis.

Personnel: Avril Lavigne (vocals, background vocals); Lukasz "Doctor Luke" Gottwald (guitar, piano); Butch Walker (guitar, keyboards, percussion, programming, background vocals); Deryck Whibley, Tim Pierce, Greg Suran (guitar); Larry Corbett (cello); Jamie Muhoberac (piano, keyboards); Dan Chace (keyboards, programming); Abe Laboriel, Jr., Josh Freese, Kenny Aronoff, Stevo, Travis Barker, Steven Wolf (drums).

Audio Mixers: Deryck Whibley; Chris Lord-Alge; Serban Ghenea; Tom Lord-Alge.

Spin (p.89) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Lavigne returns to the infectious hooks and mall-punk guitars that made her famous....Throughout, Lavigne spruces up her sound with pep-squad chants and funky hip-hop rhythms."
Entertainment Weekly (p.60) - "[S]he's provided the best darn rock & roll album teen girls are likely to hear all year..." -- Grade: B

3 stars Avril?
Best Damn Thing is not bad,but I think she's lost something which she had in her first album.

3 stars ok i guess
i think that avril had kinda lost it compared to let go and under my skin. there are only 2 songs that i really like girlfriend and runaway. i think that she needs to go back to the days of let go.

2 stars Yeah whatever
Not her best. Some of the songs in this album are unnecessarily overrated. Of course - she can do better.

"I'm With You" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Awards for Song Of The Year and for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "Losing Grip" was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Headstrong and fiercely independent, 17-year-old Avril Lavigne makes a huge splash with her debut LET GO, a collection of confessional songs with attitude reminiscent of fellow prodigy/Canuck Alanis Morissette. Collaborating ...

While Avril Lavigne's 2002 debut, LET GO, arrived amidst a tidal wave of teen female performers, the 17-year-old Canadian singer/songwriter managed to distinguish herself with a punk-rock attitude tempered by a hooky pop sensibility. Lavigne's sound reached a remarkably wide audience, even inspiring indie-rock icon Liz Phair to openly pattern her next record after it. With her 2004 follow-up, ...

Rihanna Good Girl Gone Bad CD  (2007)

Best Damn Thing
CD $14.05  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
The music of Barbados-born singer Rihanna--a breezy blend of hip-hop, commercial pop, and Caribbean flavors--made her a bona fide superstar before the age of 20. Given her immediate success, one had to wonder if Rihanna would be a flash in the pan, but her third album, 2007's GOOD GIRL GONE BAD, is a winner. Interestingly, Rihanna avoids the Caribbean tinge that made her breakthrough single "Pon the Replay" a massive hit, sticking instead to more straightforward dance-pop designed for the club and the singles charts. More interesting still, she pulls it off with assurance and skill. It doesn't hurt that heavyweight producers such as Timbaland (who contributes ...

Ever since she won the first-ever AMERICAN IDOL reality-TV competition, Kelly Clarkson has tried to distance herself from the very institution that brought her fame. More so than any PR move or interview sound bite, however, it's Clarkson's third full-length that may represent her biggest push for career and artistic control. MY December kicks off with the album's first single, "Never Again," and with the opening line "I hope the ring ...

Best Damn Thing
CD $14.79  Audio Samples
It does not take an expert to quickly figure out who Texas guitarist Tod Vullo's main influences are: Wes Montgomery and George Benson. Vullo mostly performs music quite reminiscent of the organ combos of the 1960s and he comes up with consistently creative solos within the idiom without breaking ...

Mareas
Juan Jose Carranza Mareas CD  (2004)

Best Damn Thing
CD $12.15  Top 500
Juan Carranza's voice is not his best asset. It has a nasal tone and sounds lightly piercing and thin, as it lacks rich harmonics. But the man can sing in tune and convincingly negotiate ornamented melodies. In fact, his voice has considerably improved since the rare vocal songs found on his previous albums -- and luckily too, since nine of the ten tracks on Mareas feature his singing. Carranza's songs have charm, appeal, and the overemphasized feelings one expects from nuevo flamenco music. His singing pushes aside his stellar guitar playing, which is truly a shame, and his songwriting is somewhat more conventional than the instrumental tunes featured ...
And His Bad Ideas
Steve Turner And His Bad Ideas CD  (2004)

Best Damn Thing
CD $12.15
Steve Turner is back! And badder than ever!Bad ideas all around. He's got a band-The Bad Ideas. He's got a new record-Steve Turner And His Bad Ideas. He is no longer the simple folk singer/balladeer of yore.n fact he's turned his back on the revolution he started: Skate-Folk.Let all the Johnny come-latelys have it. It was a bad idea.Funny stuff.OK. Enough of that. His new record is called Steve Turner And His Bad Ideas. And he thinks this record's a lot better than the last one. It was hard won.It was a shitty year after recording "Searching For Melody". A monthafter finishing, Mom was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She died sixweeks later. A few weeks after that Dad was diagnosed with livercancer. Six months later he was dead too. "Searching For Melody" had just come out by that time, and Steve hit the road. Played a lot of shows to very few people. Learned the art of humility. Drank a lot. Wrote some new songs, figured out how to play them. Went to Spain a couple times where he was reminded that life can be good. Wrote some more songs. Grew his hair way too long. Worried what was left of his family. If Mickey Newbury was still alive, he could write a great song about it all. Steve's still working on it. He wrote some more songs and made plans to record them all. Lots of friends both old and new pitched in to help. Johnny Sangster is all over it with his trademark guitar as well as keyboards and bass, his brother Jim was drafted in on bass, dobro and mandolin, Dan Peters on drums, Kevin Warner on drums, Bruce Brand on drums, Holly Golightly adds her vocals, Anne Marie Rudjavich on the violin, viola and backing vocals, Stone Gossard on cymbal and hi-hat of course, and a few more lent their hand. Johnny Sangster produced a bunch, Tucker Martine produced a bunch and Liam Watson in London produced a bunch. It was not cheap. But it was worth every penny. It's not a ...
