While Yoko Ono hasn't been quite as prolific a songwriter and performer in the new millennium as she was in the previous one, she continues to be thoroughly involved in the worlds of pop and avant-garde music. The year 2007 saw the arrival of two remix albums of older Ono material. YES, I AM A WITCH featured new remixes commissioned specifically for the album, with contributions coming from an indie-centric line-up. OPEN YOUR BOX collects the previously released 12-inch remixes Ono had been issuing since 2001. A decidedly more club/techno-driven set, OPEN YOUR BOX features contributions from Basement Jaxx, Felix da Housecat, and Danny Tenaglia, among others. The set also includes the original Orange Club Factory remix of the title track that made Ono a darling of the B.P.M. set.

Singer Don Dokken and drummer Mick Brown may be all that's left of the original Dokken, but the group's signature blend of pop and heavy metal has changed little since their late-'80s heyday. The problem is, they were never that interesting to begin with. On Hell to Pay, the role of ex-guitar legend George Lynch is played by ex-Warlock axe slinger John Levin, and the departure of original bass player Jeff Pilson brings ex-Ted Nugent and Yngwie Malmsteen collaborator Barry Sparks into the fold, resulting in a record that's impeccably played but mediocre at best. 1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. Hard as it is to believe but there has not been a proper Ringo Starr hits collection since the first, 1975's Blast from Your Past -- that's not counting 1989's Starr Struck: Best of Ringo Starr, Vol. 2, which was designed as a companion to that earlier set -- until 2007's Photograph: The Very Best of Ringo Starr.
