The jazz-fusion guitarist Norman Brown gained steadily increasing respect and sales throughout the 1990s with a series of accomplished albums that set him firmly in latter-day George Benson smooth jazz territory. This mostly instrumental set features Brown performing a palatable collection of easy-on-the-ear melodies, accompanied by an illustrious roster of sidemen, including the saxophonist Kirk Whalum and the trumpeter Rick Braun, and also boasts a typically classy Brian McKnight vocal on the tastefully seductive title track. Norman Brown won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album for Just Chillin', his fifth CD, but he says that his fans tell him their favorite recording of his was After the Storm, his second collection from 1994, and critics tend to agree. On Stay with Me, his seventh album and first for Peak Records after three each for MoJazz and Warner Bros., he returns, to an extent, to his earlier approach, which is to say there is a bit less of the overt crossover style of the Warner albums, as if he is aiming less at the "pop instrumental" prize and more at the "contemporary jazz" one. Still, there are radio-friendly vocals on many of these tracks (with Nikkole singing on "You Keep Lifting Me Higher" and Brown himself on "So in Love," the Brian McKnight-penned title track, "Every Little Thing," and "I Need You"), and the grooves remain constant. In fact, by looking back to his only slightly different earlier style, Brown has made an album that sounds more like the '80s than the 2000s. What stays intact, of course, is his fluid guitar playing, which is notable both for its rhythmic complexity and for the articulation he gets into his often quickly played notes. In that sense, the tunes and the arrangements are really incidental, although they may be more acceptable to old fans and those looking for a slightly higher jazz content. ~ William RuhlmannJazzTimes (p.114) - "The first single 'Let's Take a Ride,' is an instant classic with its hooky guitar lead and vocal scatting..." Norman Brown Stay With Me Songs Stay With Me Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) A MUST buy for smooth jazz fan I have been a Norman Brown music fan since 2002 and I must say that this album is his best. The first song " Let's take a ride " is excellent and I never get tired of replaying it over and over again. Very nice and happy song which lifts my mood.
This cd is worth buying every cent of it. Submitted by Reg W (Auckland, New Zealand) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
A return to roots... I found that this album is a return to form for Norman Brown, and a fine return it is indeed. It links up musically and artistically with his "After The Storm" album, yet it retains his maturing sense of songwriting, therefore giving the listener the best of both worlds. Unlike his previous album "West Coast Coolin", his guitar is not fighting with the vocals, but rather working with them in a playful banter, which offers a great balance. Personally, I think that the sonics of the music are better than "After The Storm" which sounded like it had a little too much bass. This album was well thought out and well crafted, and is a "must buy"! I honestly believe that most individuals would enjoy the articulate, as well as intimate guitar work that Norman Brown has put into this album. Submitted by J.R. Very Nice CD I bought this cd after buying his 'After the Storm' cd and 'Stay with Me' is also a great cd. Norman Brown has a great clean crisp sound with a good mixture of songs. Nice for highway. Submitted by MTB (KC, MO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Pleasant soul-jazz ‘Stay with me’ is the seventh solo album of Norman Brown if not taking into account ‘The very best of’ (2005), which is actually the selection based on the first three albums. I was lucky to purchase this new CD few days before the official street date. From the view point of the arrangements and tunes ‘Stay with me’ does not essentially depart from the preceding Norman Brown releases. This time however, contrary to some previous CDs, the new one is appealing almost from start to finish and is really a very pleasant soul-jazz album.
