Although guitarist John Abercrombie has recorded with several legendary lineups over the span of 30+ years, his 2000-era quartet is just as creative, innovative, and exciting to listen to as his early-career bands. With violinist Marc Feldman, bassist Marc Johnson, and drummer Joey Baron, Abercrombie continues to create stunning, fluid pieces that balance ethereality with groundedness.

The Wire (p.41) - "The players' interaction is peerless an intuitive. The result is a compelling context for Abercrombie's seemingly effortless improvisational mastery." JazzTimes (p.90) - "[Abercrombie's] playing, which is recognizable for its rich, silvery tone, is melodic, but never explicitly so." John Abercrombie Quartet Third Quartet Songs Third Quartet Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) John Abercrombie's Triumphant Return "The Third Quartet" is a remarkable album. Mark Feldman, Marc Johnson, Joey Baron, and Abercrombie have all been playing together for 9 years. The chemistry they have is unparalleled by any other working jazz group today. They all play with melodic invention and feeling. I own almost all of Abercrombie's ECM albums and this is by far his best yet.
As you may or may not know, John Abercrombie is a sadly underrated jazz guitarist. His work is often overshadowed by the work of his peers like Bill Frisell, Pat Metheny, and even by some the younger players like Ben Monder and Kurt Rosenwinkel. To put it simply: Abercrombie hasn't been as recognized as all these other guitarists. Perhaps people aren't intelligent enough to understand him? Maybe people just haven't heard of him? Chances are all of the above. Abercrombie's compositions aren't for the faint of heart. They're really beautiful, lyrical, melodic masterpieces that beg for your attention. The minute you stop listening you've missed something.
"The Third Quartet" is quite possibly the best jazz guitar album of 2007 (so far). If any of you are fans of Abercrombie then I'm sure you already own this album, but for newcomers, I urge you to pick this album up right away. Highly recommended. $21.55 Trio Beyond is the name of the group that played at Queen Elizabeth's Hall in London, 2004. Jack DeJohnette initiated a project to pay tribute to the late Tony Williams' Lifetime -- with the late Larry Young on organ and guitarist John McLaughlin, all three were Miles alumni -- a band that, along with the Miles Davis band, spearheaded the jazz-rock fusion era. DeJohnette replaced Williams in the Davis group, and John Scofield is also a Miles alumnus; Larry Goldings had been approached by Williams in 1997 to put together an organ trio with a similar concept ...

$13.49 Yonder Come the Blues has a duel life: it serves as a companion disc to the book of the same name and as a thoughtful guide to the birth of the genre now called the blues. Complier Paul Oliver has carefully chosen the tracks. This disc moves briskly from the early syncopations of fife player Othar Turner to the adoption of blues by the North Carolina Ramblers to the waxings of African-American bluesman Blind Willie Johnson. This collection does a better job than most of introducing acoustic blues because of its inclusion of earlier forms of the genre. The first two tracks, "Agbekor" and "Ring Dance," were recorded in Ghana and represent the propulsive rhythms that African slaves brought to America. Thyam Sy Griots plays a halam five-string chordophone on "Halam Improvisation," which sounds sort of like George Harrison playing the blues on a sitar. As the disc moves into its second stage, the listener is treated to Tom Darby and Jimmie Tarlton's "Sweet Sara Blues" and interestingly, Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys' "Brain Cloudy Blues." Finally, selections by Blind Lemon Jefferson and Big Bill Broonzy show the blues settling into a more recognizable form, while Pinetop Burks offers an early version of boogie-woogie. In time, acoustic guitars and pianos replaced fiddles and fifes, and many forgot that there were, indeed, other ways to play the blues. Yonder Come the Blues educates the listener by offering a generous and enjoyable collection that effectively traces the roots of a genre. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
