Recording information: AQ-30 Recording Studio; Jesus In 2in Recording Studio; Los Yedais Recording Studio; Marroneo Studio; Sangre Nueva Recording Studio; Sangre Nueva Studios; Stani Recording Studio. Photographer: Gary Bonderenko. Released in 2007, SENTIMIENTO marks the first time that Puerto Rico's Ivy Queen (born Martha Ivelisse Pesante) cracked the Billboard Top 200, affirming her considerable popularity, especially in her native land. Ivy Queen is one of the only female artists in reggaeton, and her husky voice is well-suited to the style's catchy melodies and hard-hitting beats, as evinced on the frenetic lead single "Que Lloren." Sentimientos
$12.35 Although the title, MASTERPIECE, may be a bit of an overstatement, this full-length by duo Rakim (not to be confused with the legendary hip-hop MC) y Ken-y is packed with hopped-up reggaeton that aims to please fans of the genre. The duo has been featured on numerous reggaeton compilations, including EL DRAFT 2005, and they also gained attention (and favor with female fans) with their sexy video for "Tu No Estas." MASTERPIECE shows the pair fully capable of stretching their infectious beats, rapid-fire rhymes, and catchy pop refrains over a larger canvas. The audio portion of this CD/DVD set finds the reggaeton duo Rakim & Ken-Y revisiting tracks from its 2006 album, MASTERPIECE. Highlights of the beat-driven collection include a reworking of the hit "Down" that finds the Puerto Rican pair collaborating with Hector "El Father" and a version of "Iqual Que Ayer" that features a guest shot from heavy-hitter Don Omar. A few short years ...
| | Don Omar King Of Kings CD (2006)
Sentimientos
$10.99 Released in mid 2006, KING OF KINGS finds Don Omar challenging fellow Puerto Rican superstar Daddy Yankee for the reggaeton throne. While the opening track, "Intro: Predica," presents Omar energetically rapping en Espanol over the string lines of the self-appointed "hip-hop violinist," Miri Ben-Ari, "Belly Danza" (featuring Beenie Man) works a lively dancehall vibe. Of course, Omar is sure not to leave more traditional Latin sounds behind, as evidenced by several frenetically rhythmic tracks--including "Cuentale," to name just one--on this assured and dynamic album. King of Kings sure doesn't seem like only Don Omar's second album proper. In the three years since The Last Don, his impressive debut album from 2003, he remained omnipresent. A live album (The Last Don: Live), a couple one-off hits ("Pobre Diabla," "Reggaeton Latino"), and an odds-and-ends compilation ...
| | Tego Calderon El Subestimado CD (2006)
Sentimientos
$13.69 For EL SUBESTIMADO (THE UNDERDOG), Tego Calderon moved to a major label and also increased his sophisticated take on reggaeton, Latin rap, and hip-hop. Though embraced by the reggaeton and hip-hop communities, Calderon's sound differs from his contemporaries by mixing elements of salsa, dancehall, and other forms from his native Puerto Rico (like the plena) with hard, street-level beats. Calderon's raps are personal and affecting as well, further differentiating him from the scores of party-centric reggaeton MCs. EL SUBESTIMADO should establish Calderon as one of the stand-out talents of the genre. | | Daddy Yankee El Cartel: The Big Boss CD (2007)
Sentimientos
$12.25 Personnel: Yanira Torres, Ana Paula Torres, Yosef Torres, Gilda Gonzales, Wifey (vocals); Jose Ruiz (trumpet); César Ayala (trombone). Additional personnel: Hector el Father, Fergie , Akon, William , Nicole Scherzinger. When 2004's BARRIO FINO became one of reggaeton's best selling albums, and one of the genre's defining documents, Daddy Yankee was elevated to iconic status. That status was helped by the release of BARRIO FINO EN DIRECTO, a set of live recordings, videos, and new singles released in 2005, but fans had to wait until 2007 for a new studio album. That wait was rewarded with EL CARTEL: THE BIG BOSS, a collection that arguably tops the now-classic BARRIO FINO in ambition and appeal. At 80 minutes and 21 tracks, EL CARTEL is a sprawling achievement, offering up no shortage ...
