Personnel: Juan Luis Guerra (background vocals); Luisa Payan (steel guitar); Prodigio (accordion); Luis DelRosario (alto saxophone); Sandy Gabriel (tenor saxophone); Ed Calle (baritone saxophone); Rodheb Santos (trumpet); Jose Flete (trombone); Jeremías King, Abednego DeLos Santos (bass instrument); Ramses Colón (acoustic bass); Ezequiel Francisco (drums); Juan "Chocolate" DeLaCruz (bongos); Rafael "Rafo" German (guiro); Isidro Bobadilla (percussion); Christopher Glansdorp (unknown instrument); Roger Zayas, Adalgisa Pantaleon, Juan Enrique Rizek, Janina Rosado (background vocals); David Almengot. Juan Luis Guerra gained considerable artistic and commercial stature throughout the 1980s, '90s, and 2000s. Guerra and his band 440 have experimented restlessly over the years, blending musical styles from their native Dominican Republic, such as bachata and merengue, with African-influenced sounds, jazz, R&B, salsa, folk, rock, and commercial pop. LA LAVE DE MI CORAZON (2007) is one of Guerra's strongest efforts, bringing together his adventurous leanings with catchy, accessible songs and excellent, lockstep musicianship. Incessantly upbeat, the album is a joy to listen to, a fact assisted by its beautifully crisp production. With his typical style and charm, Juan Luis Guerra delivers an intoxicating mix of merengue, bachata and salsa so expertly written and performed as to become an old favorite after the very first listen. Most comparable to 1998's Ni Es Lo Mismo Ni Es Igual for its amazing variety, La Llave de Mi Corazon surprises listeners with the unique texture and feel of each track, with evocative melodies and poetic lyrics that invite a closer look. Though the tropical music world (bachata and merengue in particular) is known for releasing records with totally homogenous repertoire -- most tracks so similar that the differences from song to song are semantic -- such is never the case with Guerra. From rollicking merengues like "Amores" to the New York salsa styled "Travesia" to the tender balladry of "Solo Tengo Ojos Para Ti," Guerra takes to each new musical terrain as if it were his native soil. Sonically, Guerra and 4.40 have found the balance between the heavily synthesized and the completely acoustic, leaning towards the raw and natural. Though the electronic sounds of days gone by have been fun, the woody warmth of Llave de Mi Corazon sounds mature and strong, serious. Though there's plenty of pop luster, there are no electronic techniques used that will date this album for future listeners. Not surprisingly, this record went straight to the top of Billboard's Latin Tropical Albums Charts, and even took a place in the Billboard Top 100. Llave de Mi Corazon may be the record that marks Guerra's ascension from genre heavy hitter to living legend. This CD was nominated for a Grammy award in 2007 for Best Tropical Latin Album. ~ Evan C. La Llave De Mi Corazon

Original score composed by R.E.M. "The Great Beyond" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. Personnel: Liane Reynolds-Mautner (violin). Audio Mixers: Clif Norrell; Paul Falcone; Joel Moss ; John Richards; Patrick McCarthy; Scott Litt; Jamie Candiloro. Photographer: François Duhamel. Arrangers: Bob James; Charlie Brissette. It could be argued that without REM's hit single "Man on the Moon" there wouldn't have been an Andy Kaufman biopic in 1999, so it was only appropriate that director Milos Forman hired the band to write the score for his film. Based on score excerpts on the Man on the Moon soundtrack, they've made some intriguing music, drawing heavily from the spirit and textures of Automatic for the People, but the record itself only give hints of the score. Since this is a soundtrack, and not a score album, there are other songs missing here that are heard in the movie, and as a '90s soundtrack, it also has snippets of dialogue scattered throughout its entirety. As a matter of fact, it often feels like the music is merely a device to connect dialogue and comedic songs, including Kaufman's signature "Mighty Mouse Theme," two songs performed by Jim Carrey (one as Kaufman, one as his alter-ego Tony Clifton), a duet between REM and Carrey's Kaufman and Clifton, and an archival Kaufman performance from a 1982 appearance ...
