Marduk has always been the Swedish blastaholic cousin of the '90s Norse underground scene, the group stripping itself down to the four basic elements of extreme metal -- drums, guitar, bass, tortured rasps -- while staring down their crooked, stubborn, corpse-painted noses at all the black metal pantywaists cradling their keyboards and speed-limit signs. Obviously, restraint was an underutilized entry in Marduk's dictionary, and the band's hard-headed approach resulted in many albums like Opus Nocturne (the third full-length in a seemingly endless discography), which offers a few inspired moments -- an anthemic riff here, a bleak lyrical turn-of-the-screw there -- amidst a blurry avalanche of blastbeat-ridden deathrashola. Grandiose midtempo slog "Materialized in Stone" and artsy-fartsy, classically influenced, spoken word number "Opus Nocturne" (a bit of a stretch, yes, but admirable within the context of Marduk's output) are the standouts here, while "Sulphur Souls," "Autumnal Reaper," and too many others race by like highway traffic, occasionally meriting a reactionary nod or shrug, but little else. Sure, Marduk is worthy of some acclaim, having carried the flag for no-bones-about-it, punch-in-the-nose black metal since the early '90s, but the band always struggled to put together a consistently memorable album -- especially one that didn't use blastbeats as an ever-present creative crutch. Opus Nocturne, unfortunately, is no different. ~ John Serba

Gorgoroth Incipit Satan CD  (2000)

Opus Nocturne album
CD $13.19  4.2 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Recorded in Sunlight Studio, Stockholm, Sweden between July and October, 1999. Black metal doesn't get any more dyed in the wool than Gorgoroth. Incipit Sathanas is a blast of prime evil that recalls the glory days when Bathory and Mayhem were busy conspiring to turn all of Scandinavia into an outpost of Hades. Flaunting the par-for-the-course Nietzsche influences on their chain mail-clad sleeves (the German philosopher is thanked in the credits, along with Burzum and Baudelaire), Gorgoroth kicks up a racket like hell on steel wheels. They trade primarily in ferocity, not speed. That said, the title track, which opens the album, erupts with a thundering drum-and-guitar blast so elemental it peels the skin from your face. Vocalist Gaahl can shriek like a harpy and growl like Satan with a head cold, and often he can do both at the same time. The thing about Incipit Sathanas is that it has plenty of variety, if not subtlety or much technical prowess -- Gorgoroth can rage and storm with enormous power and they can turn around and get broody and unsettling. "When Love Rages Wild in My Heart," for instance, starts off sounding like Type O Negative meets Wagner by way of Rammstein, and then takes a turn into a darker place where backwards vocals writhe against a background of detuned ambient noise. ...

Cannibal Corpse Tomb Of The Mutilated CD  (1992)

Opus Nocturne CD music
CD $9.69  4.7 stars Top 500
Released in 1992, Tomb of the Mutilated helped establish Cannibal Corpse's reputation as one of metal's goriest, most vile outfits. Boasting some of the sickest album art and song titles of all time, the band's attention-getting tactics worked perfectly and record sales soared. Cannibal Corpse then became one of the biggest names in the death metal genre -- just as the group's discs and live performances were being banned all over the world. Listeners unfamiliar with the belching ...

Principally recorded at Horus Studios, Hanover, Germany and Musiclab Studios, Berlin, Germany in 1988. Includes liner notes by Mille Petrozza. Kreator dialed in their modern thrash on Terrible Certainty, the group's third full-length offering. One of the most highly anticipated European metal records of the decade, this 1987 release proves that the previous year's hit, Pleasure to Kill, wasn't a fluke, and that Kreator was capable of delivering under pressure. The German outfit cranks up the technical difficulty on Terrible Certainty, executing the tightest performances of their career while maneuvering around some extremely difficult, yet memorable riffs. The guitar flurries ...

Kreator Coma Of Souls CD  (1990)

Opus Nocturne CD music
CD $10.45  4.4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Although they remained largely without peer when it came to pure Germanic thrash metal, by the time of 1990's Coma of Souls, Kreator's very successful formula had begun to grow a little tired. The fact that they were coming off perhaps their biggest album yet in 1989's Extreme Aggression didn't help matters, and despite its overwhelmingly solid songwriting, Coma of Souls still sounded somewhat repetitive to all but the most unquestioning of fans. Still, better too much of a good thing than nothing at all, and with their head-spinning musicianship and well-chosen stabs at melody, complex moshers like "When the Sun Burns Red," "Angels of Brutality," and the title song are guaranteed to thrill lovers of technically proficient thrash. Two tracks in particular stand out of the pack, namely ...

Dennis Brown Slow Down CD  (1987) (Import) United Kingdom

Opus Nocturne album
CD $10.99
Dennis Brown's career went off the boil in the early '80s, until he paired up with Gregory Isaacs in 1984 and recorded two excellent albums, which turned back up the heat. The first, Two Bad Superstars Meet, was produced by Prince Jammy, and it was to him that the singer turned when he came to record 1985's Slow Down, which is now reissued by Greensleeves. By this point, Jammy had established himself at the forefront of dancehall production, but his style worked equally well with roots veterans like Brown himself. A rootsy sound permeated his productions, albeit cut through with digital sounds, while his heavy use of horns and mid-tempo rhythms harked back to the rocksteady age. All of this conspired to provide a perfect backdrop for Brown, and all of Slow Down just simmers. Its follow-up, The Exit, gained the lion's share of attention; however, all the elements that made that a great album were already in place here. Packed with powerful vocal performances, Brown shifts through emotional gears and lyrical themes, just as passionate on the love songs as the cultural tracks. The single "Slow Down Woman" and "It's Magic" (a nod to Motown) are particularly delightful poppy numbers, "They Fight I" and "Africa We Want ...

Mudvayne The End of All Things to Come CD  (2002)

Opus Nocturne CD music
CD $8.99  4.4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
When Mudvayne's major-label debut appeared, many critics either lumped the band into the same rap-metal bag as Korn and Limp Bizkit, or merely dismissed the combo as a Slipknot rip-off. On THE END OF ALL THINGS TO COME, the group transcends the comparisons and wacky makeup to deliver a ferocious slab of the hard stuff that, for once, truly deserves to be termed "alternative." Equal parts Morbid Angel, Rush, and Shudder To Think, the disc highlights ...

Opus Nocturne music CDs
CD $20.99
Even though the '90s are considered by many longtime Yngwie Malmsteen fans as not necessarily his musical or creative peak (the '80s are usually given the nod), you have to give credit to the Swedish guitar shredder for sticking to his guns throughout the '90s. When just about every veteran rocker was trying to fit in with the musical climate (whether it be donning flannel during the grunge years or donning baggy jeans during the rap-metal years), Malmsteen ...
