While Lester Young was indeed dubbed the "Prez" of the jazz tenor saxophone by Billie Holiday, a case could be made for Dexter Gordon to be considered Chairman of the Board. One of the very first tenor saxophonists to incorporate the innovations of Charlie Parker into his approach, Gordon influenced generations of sax-masters, including Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. Like that other chairman, Gordon was a master of the ballad who could briskly swagger or smoothly croon. With him in the company of the elegant and earthy piano of Barry Harris and the brash, adroit trumpeting of Freddie Hubbard, how can one go wrong with CLUBHOUSE? Stellar.
Recorded in 1965, but not released until 1990.
Personnel: Dexter Gordon (tenor saxophone); Freddie Hubbard (trumpet); Barry Harris (piano); Ben Tucker, Bob Cranshaw (bass instrument); Billy Higgins (drums).

Clubhouse album
$8.55 A Blue Note release with Les McCann on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Otis Finch on drums. Small group format. Excellent (and exciting) soul-jazz session with Turrentine blowing hot. ~ Ron Wynn & Michael Erlewine
This 1962 session places tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine in the company of pianist Les McCann, bassist Herbie Lewis, and drummer Otis Finch. Of the six cuts on the original release, McCann, who was already in serious soul-jazz territory, wrote four. His meaty three- and four-chord figures are prominently placed and, as always, his sense of time and swing are everywhere. "Smile, Stacey" kicks it off in full blowing fare with Turrentine walking the line between soul-jazz and hard bop like a tightrope. His earthy tone is particularly muscular and quick here. His own blues ballad, "Soft Pedal Blues," follows, with Turrentine doing his best Ben Webster with slow, smoky breathy tones and McCann trilling across the top on the turnarounds. The slippery soul-blues of "Pia" is a shimmering little groover by McCann with him singing along with the ...
| | Hank Mobley Another Workout: RVG Series CD (1961)
Clubhouse CD music
$8.49 This is part of Blue Note's Collector's Choice series. These are limited-edition pressings of a few thousand copies.
This LP has material from 1961 that for no real reason went unreleased until 1985. One song, "Three Coins in a Fountain," is from the same session that resulted in tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley's famous Workout session with guitarist Grant Green, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The other five numbers -- three obscure Mobley originals, plus "I Should Care" and "Hello Young Lovers" -- are from the previously unheard December 5, 1961 session with the same personnel except for Green. Hank Mobley was in a prime period around this time, and all of his Blue Note recordings are well worth picking up. ~ Scott Yanow
Reviewers called tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley underrated so many times that the word may as well have been his middle name, and when combined with the numerous financial, personal, and health issues that Mobley endured during his career, it all ...
| | Johnny Griffin Congregation CD (1957) Bonus Tracks
Clubhouse music CDs
$9.75 This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series.
The Rudy Van Gelder-helmed reissue of 1957's THE CONGREGATION improves on what is already a classic Johnny Griffin date. Backed by Paul Chambers on bass, Kenny Dennis on drums, and Sonny Clark on piano, Griffin demonstrates his usual dazzling dexterity on the tenor sax. The mode is straightforward bop, with a balance of uptempo numbers and ballads, and plenty of stretching out all around. This set comes highly recommended--especially ...
| | Freddie Hubbard Here To Stay CD (1988) Remastered
Clubhouse songs
$8.99 This two-LP set, which was released in 1979 as part of United Artists' Blue Note reissue series, brought back trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's early album Hub Cap, a sextet session with tenor-saxophonist Jimmy Heath, trombonist Julian Priester, and pianist Cedar Walton. Although that session (comprised of four Hubbard compositions, one of Walton's songs, and Randy Weston's "Cry Me Not") is excellent, it is the full album of previously unreleased material from an all-star quintet that is of greatest interest. Hubbard teams up with fellow Jazz Messengers Wayne Shorter (on tenor), Walton, bassist Reggie Workman, and (in Blakey's spot) drummer Philly Joe Jones for some advanced hard bop. Highpoints include the fiery "Philly Mignon" and a strong version of "Body and Soul." ~ Scott Yanow

Clubhouse CD music
$10.39 Vuelve el Gigante is subject to speculation about Alegre's intentions (payback for years of support work, riding brother Eddie Palmieri's coattails, or a serious attempt to promote older brother Charlie). In any case the album presents incredible star power and opportunity. There are compositions by Arsenio Rodriguez (the eight-minute "El Guaya Catalina"), Chico O'Farrill, Raoul Morrero, and others. ...
