| | Maraca Body Is Too Slow For Me CD Maraca Discography of CDs
Many of the contemporary Czech alternative artists who have recorded for Indies Records have opted to perform in the Czech language exclusively. But Maraca is among the exceptions to that rule; unlike other Indies releases, The Body Is Too Slow for Me contains some songs in English as well as some songs in other languages. But then, including some English-language material is part of this band's multiculturalism, and it is one of the things that contributes to Maraca's delightful unpredictability. Maraca is by no means an easy band to categorize; this experimental CD is probably best described as Czech alternative rock or Czech avant-garde rock with elements of jazz, cabaret, and world music. Lead singer Gabriela Vermelho projects some of Tori Amos' quirkiness and eccentricity, but The Body Is Too Slow for Me is hardly a carbon copy of an Amos album; in fact, it's not at all. There is a lot going on here: electric guitar, electric bass, and Hammond organ are heard alongside world music instruments ranging from the oud (an Arabic lute) to the didgeridoo (an instrument associated with Australian Aboriginals) to the Indian sitar. Indian musician Amit Chatterjee brings some raga flavor to the table, but elements of North African, Middle Eastern, East European, and Mediterranean music also assert themselves. Parts of this 2005-2006 recording are somewhat self-indulgent, but even then, Maraca is highly musical, and all things considered, their creativity yields enjoyable results on The Body Is Too Slow for Me. ~ Alex Henderson Body Is Too Slow For Me Music Maraca Body Is Too Slow For Me Songs | 1. | Fizy |

Body Is Too Slow For Me album
$12.29 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big throaty growl hammering down lyrics like a Southern fire-and-brimstone preacher with earthshaking ...

$5.89 Eric Davidson of the New Bomb Turks compiled this collection of 16 high-attitude rock & roll bands whose quality level far outstrips their (current) public recognition, and while some of this sounds like the Turks (especially the Columbian Neckties, who've learned well from the masters), the only clear connection between most of these cuts is the notion that enthusiasm and adrenaline go a long way toward creating great music. Between the Stones-style strut of the Rock 'n' Roll Soldiers, the speedy '70s-style hard rock of Dixie Witch, the garage-pop sneer of the Cuts, the full-on punk assault of the Baseball Furies, the stripped-back funky swagger of the Chargers Street Gang, the blues-wailing freakout of Scat Rag Boosters, the Misfits-ish bellowing of the Diverters, and the bummed-out mid-'60s moan of the Hunches and the Goddamned Gentlemen, Davidson has found a passel of worthwhile bands that actually have distinctive sounds and personalities, and while some tracks hit the target cleaner than others, pretty much everyone on board sounds like a band you wouldn't mind hearing more from, either in a quality dive or on your stereo system. Davidson puts together a truly fine mixtape and seems to be a pretty sharp talent scout as well; Greaseball Melodrama offers 42 minutes of quality rock & roll entertainment and proves that even in this benighted age there are still great undiscovered bands out there. So hows about a Vol. 2? ~ Mark Deming
