A nice debut outing for longtime session player Frankie Cicala, Frankie Plays is, in essence, a relatively short set of straightforward, easy listening jazz. Nothing here gets too adventurous, nothing too funky (which is a little surprising, given Cicala's previous outings with Bernie Worrell after his Mothership days). When a song opens with the percussionist running across the chimes, you know it's not going to get too exciting. Nonetheless, Cicala plays a mean guitar, fitting himself into tight melodies and lush string/synth arrangements in the background. The music is nearly all penned by Cicala (with the exception of Mason Williams' excellent "Classical Gas" from the late '60s, complete with orchestral backing), and nearly all of it has a gentle summertime feel, perhaps a result of Cicala's long association with the Jersey shore. Song after song, he strums and picks his way through some light affairs, coming out the other end with a taste of something timeless and short-lived at the same time. Not the most adventurous album by a long shot, but it still delivers a good easy listening experience. ~ Adam Greenberg

Frankie Plays! songs
$14.65 This superbly recorded double disc (the original engineer was Eddie Kramer, best-known for his work with Hendrix) captured over a weekend worth of dates in February 1970 at the venerable New York City venue catches the Brit boogie quartet at the peak of their powers. These shows were sandwiched between their triumphant Woodstock set and the release of Cricklewood Green, generally considered the band's best work. They find the group primed through years of roadwork, as well as obviously excited to be playing in front of an appreciative N.Y.C. crowd. Kicking off with one of Bill Graham's patented individual-member intros, the group winds their way through the ominous riff of "Love Like ...

Frankie Plays! CD music
$10.49 When drummer Ginger Baker decided to form his own band, he reached out to the cream of British musicians, and recruited guitarist Eric Clapton and his rhythm mate from the Alexis Korner and Graham Bond bands, bassist Jack Bruce. Cream ushered in a formidable new wave of electric blues bands, including the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Led Zeppelin. Among the converts was a 13-year old Irish guitarist named Gary Moore, who saw Cream in Belfast and went on to form Thin Lizzy with Phil Lynott.
BBM's AROUND THE NEXT DREAM is the culmination of Moore's boyhood dream to play in a blues band like Cream. With his muscular Les Paul timbre and dancing attack, Moore invokes the spirit of Eric Clapton and all the great British blues players of the '60s, to particular effect on the jump blues workout "Wonder Why" and the ferocious variations of "Why Does Love Have To Go Wrong" (which echoes the Bruce-Baker groove on "We're Going Wrong").
Needless to say, echoes of Cream (and the bassist's esteemed solo ...

$9.89 If one feels their music getting a bit stale, perhaps a little too predictable, then they have a couple choices. They can dig back into their roots to reconnect with the music they love, or they can go head to head with a counterpoint in an effort to create sparks. Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis choose the latter course in Tough Tenors, turning a half-dozen pieces into an enticing mix of ...
