$11.35 This program focuses on the high-profile conflicts and rivalries emerging between hip-hop artists. These battles might be called cat fights if their participants didn't put so much stress on machismo; the back-and-forth insult contests can lead to impressive wordplay and entertainment--but also, sometimes, to violence. The "beefs" between 50 Cent and The Game, Lil' Flip and TI, and Nelly and Chingy are just a few of those examined here.
Some rappers will do anything for respect, even starting a beef with another rapper or crew..and that can lead to raw, brutal conflict in the streets. This DVD is about high-profile beefs in the hip-hop culture. ...
| | Chamillionaire Sound Of Revenge CD (2005) Parental Advisory
Roots review
$13.15 (MP3 Available for Download) Personnel: Chamillionaire (rap vocals); Killer Mike, Krayzie Bone, Lil Wayne, Pastor Troy, Rasaq, Scarface, Lil' Flip, Natalie , Bun B (rap vocals). With THE SOUND OF REVENGE, Chamillionaire's 2005 Universal debut, the Houston-based rapper makes the most of his major-label deal, which includes his own Chamillitary imprint. On SOR, Paul Wall's former collaborator amps up that duo's signature chopped-and-screwed mixtape sound with heavy-duty arrangements that expertly showcase Chamillionaire's deep, husky voice. The introductory title track is marked by machine-gun beats, and establishes the album's fierce, restless mood. But the disc's highlight is the utterly infectious single "Turn It Up," which boasts Scott Storch's distinctive chiming production and an appearance by Lil' Flip. Although fellow Texan Bun-B, Krayzie Bone, and others also show up, REVENGE doesn't rely on guest shots; this is Chamillionaire's show through and through, as proven by each track on this assured and potent record. An experienced MC with piles of mixtapes and other underground releases in his past, Chamillionaire follows Mike Jones, Slim Thug, and Paul Wall as yet another Houstonian to surface aboveground in 2005. He's immeasurably superior to Jones in every aspect but self-promotion, isn't quite as imposing as Slim Thug, and, compared to childhood ally and former Color Changin' Click partner Wall, he's much sterner than sweet, indicated by the title of this album. The Chamillionaire that Southerners and other rabid followers of Southern rap have been hearing throughout the past few years hasn't made many concessions with this major-label release. He goes relatively soft on a couple tracks, but the tradeoff is that he continues ...

| | Maya DVD (2001) Widescreen
Roots video
$18.85 Exploring how the innocence of children is inevitably and tragically corrupted by the actions of adults, MAYA is the debut feature from Indian director Digvijay Singh. Singh's tranquil, measured pace is more Satyajit Ray than Bollywood, fitting given the serious nature of the subject matter. The film begins with the playful antics of 12 year old Maya and her cousin Sanjay, who live a carefree life in rural India. Singh subtly builds to the moment when Maya is forced into "womanhood" by a grotesque and horrific religious ritual, which destroys her simple lifestyle forever. The second place finisher for the ...

| | Chocolate War DVD (1988) Widescreen; Subtitled
Roots movie DVD
$9.69 Keith Gordon's directorial debut is an adaptation of Robert Cormier's novel about one boy's quest for personal freedom. Jerry (Ilan Mitchell-Smith) is an idealistic freshman at Trinity, a Catholic high school for boys, who refuses to accept the status quo of the conventional school. The annual chocolate sale at Trinity is a source of revenue and great pride for Brother Leon (John Glover), a tyrannical and egomaniacal teacher who has been put in charge of the sale as acting headmaster. In an attempt to undermine Brother Leon's grand scheme to sell more chocolates than ever before, Archie (Wally Ward), the smug and brilliant leader of the Vigils, an elite secret society at the school, delivers an assignment to Jerry--refuse to accept any chocolates to sell for 10 days. Jerry willingly agrees to the plan but unexpectedly defies the system when he refuses to take part in the sale at all, infuriating Brother Leon and Archie, who unite to terrorize the young rebel. The power struggle that ensues is a brilliant lesson in intimidation and manipulation delivered by schoolmates and teachers alike. This dreamy and surreal study of youths coping with power and rebellion is reminiscent of LORD OF THE FLIES and DEAD POETS SOCIETY, delivering a refreshing and simple view of a classic ...
