John Barry's fifth Oscar-winning score is a profoundly moving body of music, generally (though not entirely) elegiac in tone, very much like the movie for which it was written. It's also a bit of a mixed bag, occasionally falling back on material that will be familiar to fans of the James Bond movies that Barry scored during the early/mid-'60s. The main title theme uses some of those devices -- dense, heavy string passages adjacent to trumpet calls -- but it is hardly representative ...

When one speaks of supergroups, alternative rock has seen its share of shining moments, from 1991's Temple Of The Dog to 1995's Mad Season. In 2002, the wheel spun around to Queens Of The Stone Age with SONGS FOR THE DEAF, their bid to save hard rock. While QOTSA founders Nick Oliveri and Josh Homme have often used a variety of players to round out their lineup, having Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) make his return to the drum throne is cause enough to stop the presses. If that weren't enough, add former Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan and you've got all the ingredients for hard-rock greatness.
Classic rock fans may recall with fondness the car-radio opening from Kiss' DESTROYER, paid tribute on opening track "Millionare" (SONGS is strung together with a series of similar radio station interludes). The vibe is set with fierce impact; requisite Sabbath-like riffs and T. Rex-from-hell swagger are the weapons of choice. Grohl sounds quite at home behind the drums, leaving double-bass drummers scratching their heads with his single-kick mastery in "First It Giveth." Be it undeniable vocal harmony ("Another Love Song"), balls-out psychedelic rock ("Song For The Dead"), or moody alt-rock grooving ("The Sky Is Falling"), SONGS FOR THE DEAF makes a strong case for rock album ...

$16.55 When Dexys Midnight Runners' 1980 album SEARCHING FOR THE YOUNG SOUL REBELS became a huge success, long-brewing tensions among the bandmembers and leader Kevin Rowland caused a major rift and the band split. Rowland was left with the Dexys name while most of the band formed a similar sounding soul-influenced outfit called the Bureau. Kevin "Al" Archer, who was Rowland's main musical partner in Dexys, left to form a new band that would head in a slightly different direction: the Blue Ox Babes. After a few semi-successful singles, the Babes were set to release their debut album, APPLES & ORANGES, in 1988 when fate stepped in yet again: their label, Go-Discs, decided not to release the album at all and dropped the band from its roster. Now, 21 years later, the album finally gets an official release on Cherry Red complete with nine bonus tracks--and what a release it is. APPLES & ORANGES is everything you would expect a Dexys-related album to sound like--only better. Archer's voice recalls both Rowland and Liverpool legend Pete Wylie (with a little Marc Bolan quiver thrown in), while the bandmembers are accomplished and energetic. The production is top-notch and the songs are fantastic. This would have been a great follow-up to TOO-RYE-AY, and it makes you wonder why a label would choose not to release an album this strong. Standout tracks include "It Could Have Been Love," "Walking on the Line," ...
