$9.99 Black Eyed Peas, the hip-hop crossover juggernaut that propelled singer Fergie and producer Will.I.Am to superstardom, have, since 2003's ELEPHUNK, been audaciously plugging away at their bombastic but lighthearted style of rap-cum-dance ...
| | Leona Lewis Echo CD (2009)
Veteran CD music
$11.18 The goal of Leona Lewis' 2007 debut, Spirit, was to prove that an X Factor winner could be a phenomenon not just in the U.K., but in the rest of the world. The goal of her second album, 2009's Echo, is to prove that success was no fluke, to build upon "Bleeding Love" and turn Lewis into an actual diva. Certainly, Echo in any of its incarnations -- its song listings are tailored for individual markets, with the U.K. getting a cover of Oasis' "Stop Crying Your Heart Out," while the U.S. gets a second song co-written by Justin Timberlake -- uses the chilly, synthesized "Bleeding Love" as its foundation, creating a sheet of sound equal parts Euro-pop and modern American R&B. As opposed to the often-stuffy Spirit, this is proudly modern, and if the sounds emanating from the two sides of the Atlantic might seem to be aesthetically opposed, they're both producer-driven music constructed layer by layer from rhythm to the vocal, where the overall sound matters more than what's being sung. Which isn't to say that Lewis doesn't sing the hell out of the songs on Echo: she has an uncanny gift for hitting impossible notes without seeming as if she's grandstanding. In fact, there's nary an ounce of diva in Lewis, she seems to enjoy singing for the sake of it, which helps her out on an album like Echo, where the melodies are elliptical, not catchy, designed to showcase range, not to stick in the head or evoke emotion. Similarly, the productions are designed to hop into as many different ...

$12.15 When I was nine almost ten my father shot and killed my mother. I remember that night like it was yesterday. My father and mother were going through the divorce process and my dad moved out a few weeks to a month prior to the murder. December seventh nineteen eighty four my dad came to our house to take my brother and I to a basketball game. He picked us up on time, but dropped us off at my grandmother's house. He told us he'd be right back. I can't remember how long we waited; it seemed like for ever though. My aunt lived on the top of the hill and I noticed her pull in. We really liked her, and so we went up to see her. My brother and I were at her house for maybe an hour when a bunch of our family started pulling in from out of town. I got really excited because our family frequently had reunions. I thought," that's why everyone is here." Then I heard the whispers, they don't know they don't know. At that moment my older sister walked in to that living room, sobbing. She looked absolutely devastated. I knew our mom was dead. She grabbed both of us and confirmed what I knew. Mom is dead! We stood in the middle of that living room holding each other and just crying rivers. There are so many things about that night I wish at times I could forget. The look on my sisters face, words that were spoken, the death of my mother, and what I'm about to share with you. I walked out of that room steaming! There were some major things that happen that I'm not going to share for time sake, but eventually I ended up in bed. I don't know how long I was sleeping when I was awoken by the caress of another aunt. Her boyfriend had joined and was trying to get some quality time. He was like,"come on baby." My aunt had told him no about three times. I was facing the opposite direction the whole time and they didn't know I was awake. He gave it one more try, "baby come on," no I'm trying to consol him, "F that kid I'm trying to spend time with you." I was wide awake. The rest of my childhood pretty much sucked. It seemed like everyday I had someone telling me I'd never be anything; I was stupid just like my dumb daddy, encouraging things like that. Some family took out there anger on me, I guess because of the resemblance. This was on top of getting teased at school for not having a mom or dad and in Jr. High being in special Ed. My acting out made my life harder than it should have been but I had so much anger and no tools to deal with that anger except for one. My fists became my way to shut people up. They also got me in a lot of trouble. I ended up on probation, in and out of Juvenile Hall making horrible discussions. High school was crazy. I was an athlete and that brought popularity. I was very sexually active and dropped out of school my senior year because I had a baby on the way and a little inheritance. I 'm leaving out a lot of things in between again for time. I started gang banging, doing drugs. Not taking care of my responsibilities. On October fifteenth nineteen ninety-three, I had a God encounter that changed my life. That fall it had rained a month non stop. I was out with some friends getting high. We got the munchies and decided to go to the store. Half way to the store my friend says, "I'm gona take you to hell with me tonight." I said, "What did you say." He said nothing of course and we made it to the store. On the way back to his house I was looking out the window of the car. He said it again, "Rich I'm gona take to hell with me tonight." After he finished that sentence lighten flashed and I heard the voice of God. "Richard this world is just an illusion!" Immediately fear came over me. I said, man I'm about to die, I'm about to die. My friends, said, you're just high. There were so many God things that happened from seeing angles, to the physical manifestation of opposition from the enemy. That night I accepted Jesus as my lord and savior and ever since that day I have devoted my life to be used for his kingdom.
