| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Junction CD music
$15.15 Shakira's brand new English album She Wolf is an uptempo pop album. It is all about synthesizers and electronic concepts, all mixed with the world sounds that we are used to from Shakira.. sounds from countries like India, the Middle East and her home country of Colombia. She Wolf features a predominantly English track list with a follow up album of new and unique repertoire in Spanish to come in 2010. The title track "She-Wolf " boasts the infectious and energizing sound that made Shakira a household name, with a slightly more dancey/ electronic beat (about 125 beats per minute). Though most tracks on the upcoming album will be in English, Shakira chose to service the Spanish version of the first single, "Loba", two weeks before the English single is launched.
Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: ...
| | Eric Benet True To Myself CD (1996)
Junction music CDs
$7.19 When music history is written and the retro-soul movement of the '90s and its primary proponents (Erykah Badu, Maxwell, D'Angelo, Tony Rich) are mentioned, Eric Benet will be invariably and unfairly overlooked. A quick listen to his 1996 debut TRUE TO MYSELF makes this oversight all the more puzzling. Benet combines the sensuality and smoothness of '70s soul with the new-jack upfrontness of '90s R&B minus the lewdness.
Benet mixes sexual and sanctified vibes with the aid of a creamy croon that permeates everything from the upbeat funk of "Spiritual Thang" to the bouncing grooves of "More Than Just A Girlfriend." On slow burners such as "Just Friends," "I'll Be There" and the title track, Benet is the kind of balladeer whose voice ripples with the kind of frisson normally associated with Teddy Riley. On Sly Stone's "If You Want Me To Stay," the Milwaukee native flawlessly pulls off the author's funky falsetto (with the aid of producer/multi-instrumentalist Roger Troutman) with a little Al Green thrown in for good measure. Most impressive is the cautionary, anti-drug anthem "Chains," which serves as the perfect companion piece to Living Colour's "Open Letter To A Landlord."

| | Michael Mayer Immer 2 CD (2006) (Import) Germany
Junction CD music
$15.05 Rumors about an Immer sequel started long before the delay of its release became prolonged. The wait shaped it into what must be one of the most anticipated dance releases in years. This is baffling in that it's a mix album based around previously released material, that it comes from a DJ who is often criticized for lack of flash and an emphasis on sequencing over traditional mixing, and that the DJ had issued two other mix albums since Immer. Conversely, it's a testament to Immer's durability and the DJ's near-iconic status in spite of an ego-less and relatively hands-off approach. It's also doubtful that any other active jock would hatch the idea of a mix album and spend well over a year waiting for all the components to make themselves available. In fact, going by the release dates of the selections on Immer 2, it's possible that Michael Mayer had the sequence of the first third of the mix in place for months, only to put it on the shelf for nearly half a year before resuming. All ...

Junction songs
$9.85 DJ Le Spam & the Spam Allstars blend improvisational electronic elements and turntables with latin, funk, hip hop and dub to create a sound that is unique – an electronic descarga. It’s not a known genre. It’s hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But as we look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and festival-goers driving for hours to catch a show -- we know something very special is going on.Spam Allstars are road warriors -- a touring band. Perhaps one could say they are taking an “old school” approach to sharing their music. For each performance they have, every music lover they meet, every time they bring yet another musician into the fold for a collaboration – Spam Allstars celebrate their opportunity to work as musicians and be creative each day.The band’s newest release – electrodomésticos (Spamusica Records, 4/2007) -took roughly 18 months to record. Most of the sessions were done at the City of Progress studio in North Miami, FL, and produced by DJ Le Spam. All of it was recorded while working around a 200+ yearly performance schedule. DJ Le Spam wanted to capture certain moments with musicians that the band had played with over the last three years. The outcome is a refreshing collection of recordings featuring each of the Spam Allstars – Andrew Yeomanson/DJ Le Spam (turntables, samplers, guitar, bass), Adam Zimmon (guitars), Tomas Diaz (timbales, vox), AJ Hill (saxes, vox), Steve Welsh (saxes), Mercedes Abal (flute, vox), Chad Bernstein (trombone, vox), and ...
