On his 2007 debut, LIFE IN CARTOON MOTION, U.K.-based performer Mika (born Michael Holbrook Penniman) offers up a set of songs as vibrant and bold as the album's colorful cover. Boasting a multi-octave vocal range, Mika readily recalls both Queen's Freddie Mercury and the Bee-Gees, and like those artists, the young singer/pianist glides effortlessly between buoyant glam-tinged pop ("Grace Kelly") and falsetto-wielding disco ("Love Today"), making LIFE one of the most curiously impressive radio-friendly releases of the year.Rolling Stone (p.74) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[H]e serves up huge, ultraflamboyant razzle-dazzle, often transmitted through pounded piano..." Spin (p.88) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]his U.K.-chart-topping magpie makes good with bountiful tunes and Broadway vocal dazzle..." Q (p.113) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'Any Other World' is an orchestrated piece in the style of Rufus Wainwright, and 'Happy Ending' is sweet and highly original pop." Mojo (Publisher) (p.100) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "For anyone who fancies an irresistible mix of vaudeville and disco, this is just perfect." Compliment 49 year old man here. BIGGEST Freddie Mercury fan on planet. This Mika, comparison to Freddie is the ULTIMATE compliment to him or ANY other singer out there. To have an octave range even remotely compared to Mercury's is a compliment of the highest nature. I was turned on to the Grace Kelly tune. Had it minimized as I worked in another window and while listening to him, I heard ALOT of Freddie. Thanks Mika, keep up the good work. The dude has enormous potential.
I'm not the biggest lover of new stuff now days. Kinda set in my ways, but I'm going to give more of his stuff a listen. Hope the rest of it is as good as the first song I heard. Submitted by txorzel ("Andy" Griffith, Andiana USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Simply GREAT!!! Since the day I bought it I have listened to it every single day. Many people compare him to Mercury, but Mika is not really the same thing, he IS NOT a copycat just as this asshole said he is. This music makes me happy, it's kind of a drug haha...it really makes me feel good. Mika is original, great, and definetly a lovely dude. A Popish expirience Claims his place in pop history. A "coloured based pop" that resembles the perfect mixture of piano melodies and disco / pop rythms... Perfect for the easy listener. Theres no bad song on this CD, but is full of catchy rythms.
It's like returning to music classes in school. Submitted by dferna90 (Lima, Peru) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Life In Cartoon Motion
$11.69 All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
Ferry's first solo effort since the second breakup of Roxy Music is arguably his best, in part because it continues in the direction the band had been going. It's like AVALON, only more so.
Here, Ferry's lounge lizard affectations are writ large; the lyrical pose is all bruised romantic fatalism (say hello, "Slave to Love"), and the music fits it like a ...
| | Laura Branigan Self Control CD (1984)
Life In Cartoon Motion
$6.09 Laura Branigan's third album capitalized on the Euro-dance-pop and affecting ballads that made her an international star while allowing her to grow as a vocalist. Her collections, always uneven in terms of material, benefit mostly from her stellar voice, and this is no exception."The Lucky One" and "Heart" start slow and build to a crescendo, perfectly showcasing her range without being obvious. The title track, about finding sex in the seamy side of town, sparked a bit of a controversy, but ended up being her second biggest hit. The song itself works, but Branigan was never a sex bomb, so the fact that ...

| | Ride CDs (2001)
Life In Cartoon Motion
$41.89 Pricey import box sets are always hard to recommend. But this is cheap as those go, and musically, it's just dynamite. Jamming on TV in 2001? If you can do that, boys, and get along again (the deterioration in this department is what killed 'em in the end, circa their final, just awful LP we've all tried to forget, 1996's Tarantula-an LP Ride has also tried to forget, judging from its near total exclusion here!), why not get back out there and play? It sure beats Bell wasting his time, if not his purse, bassing, not guitaring (for chrissakes) for Oasis, that's for sure! ~ Jack Rabid
Finally back in print! The ultimate turn-on for the serious Ride collector. The Ride box set comprises the 0X4 Best Of plus Firing Blanks & Ride Live. Firing Blanks Unreleased Recordings 1988-95 includes 15 previously unheard tracks from the band's Oxford archives. Ride Live - Reading Festival 1992 captures the band at the height of their incendiary powers with an unforgettable live show, originally recorded for Japanese TV. 2006.
Consisting of three discs and a bulky booklet, Ride's history is broken down to an A-list (OX4: The Best of Ride), a collection of outtakes (Firing Blanks), and a disc that documents their 1992 Reading Festival appearance. It's true that they can't make everyone perfectly happy, but just who this box set is aiming to please is unclear. It can't be die-hard fans and it most certainly can't be newcomers. Most diehards won't want the best-of disc -- it's someone else's idea of Ride's best moments, not their own. Newcomers would hardly think to start with a set that's two-thirds unrepresentative. Besides, they can purchase the best-of disc separately, even though square one should truly be Nowhere. To be entirely pleased with the box, one must fall in some nebulous middle territory between committed and curious, a place that might not even exist. These problems aside, the overall presentation is striking. Patched together with involvement from the band and management, a great deal of care was put into the project to make it look and sound good. It's no cheap ...
