| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Broken Hill
$14.39 Shakira's brand new English album She Wolf is an uptempo pop album. It is all about synthesizers and electronic concepts, all mixed with the world sounds that we are used to from Shakira.. sounds from countries like India, the Middle East and her home country of Colombia. She Wolf features a predominantly English track list with a follow up album of new and unique repertoire in Spanish to come in 2010. The title track "She-Wolf " boasts the infectious and energizing sound that made Shakira a household name, with a slightly more dancey/ electronic beat (about 125 beats per minute). Though most tracks on the upcoming album will be in English, Shakira chose to service the Spanish version of the first single, "Loba", two weeks before the English single is launched.
Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often ...
| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Broken Hill
$17.65 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has been for about a decade, and there's no threat of the album becoming ponderous either as the economical tracklist and ...
| | Judas Priest Concert Classics CD (2009) Reissue
Broken Hill
$11.18 There was a time when British Steel was the hottest, hardest, and most awesome substance on the planet. On Judas Priest "Concert Classics", here it is, in its most appropriate circumstances: live, on stage. Judas Priest re-invented heavy metal. The first band to use the twin-guitar attack, they built on the foundation Black Sabbath had laid and moved metal to a new level. Looking back on the body of the work that the classic Priest line-up of Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, K.K. Downing, Ian Hill and Dave Holland has ...
| | Kiss Sonic Boom CDs (2009)
Broken Hill
$16.09 When SONIC BOOM was released, it had been over a decade since the last Kiss studio album, so expectations were understandably high. In addition, the intervening period had seen the band fire two of its founding members for the second time, only to replace them with sidemen wearing Ace Frehley and Peter Criss's iconic makeup. Luckily, the new additions, unlike some of Kiss's "un-masked years" members, have a good feel for classic Kiss. That fact, matched with Paul Stanley's assumption of production duties, makes SONIC BOOM one of the most consistent and thoroughly Kiss-sounding albums since the group's `70s heyday. That said, the New York City unit manages to branch out a bit; alongside very ...

| | Ricardo Arjona Galeria Caribe CD (2000) Bonus Track
Broken Hill
$9.15 This album took a while to connect with the mainstream U.S. audience, making the Billboard pop charts quite a while after its initial release, but in the pop world sleepers are often the most substantive successes. Accordingly, GALERIA CARIBE finds Hispanic heartthrob Ricardo Arjona delivering his patented brand of Latin pop with unprecedented vigor. While Arjona is primarily a romantic crooner, as evidenced by GALERIA CARIBE's bounty of lush, crystalline ballads, he's not beyond getting into some uptempo Latin grooves. Throughout the album, Arjona shifts easily and elegantly from crooner mode into a percolating feel propelled by hints of everything from salsa and samba to hints of Cuban son. Consequently, the pan-Latin sound of GALERIA CARIBE, with its multi-cultural pop aesthetic, has found favor with listeners of many tastes and backgrounds.
Guatemalan singer/songwriter Ricardo Arjona brings a collection of Afro-Caribbean sounds, exploring traditional rhythms such as guaracha, bachata, merengue, and salsa, adding his passionate voice and poetic lyrics. Giovanni Hidalgo plays a vibrating Latin percussion, while talented trumpeter Arturo Sandoval provides a seductive performance. Ricardo Arjona's exploratory work Galeria Caribe proves to be one of his most interesting records. | | The Radials CD (2009)
Broken Hill
$11.49 The 12 songs that comprise "The Radials" runs the gamut of American roots music and has been described as George Jones meets the Rolling Stones. The sound recalls that of classic Americana/alt.country acts like Son Volt, Steve Earle, Whiskeytown and the Backsliders. Over the course of the disc, the Radials touch on styles ranging from 1950s honky tonk to 1990s grunge rock with a seemless flow that doesn't feel forced. The overall lyrical feel is that of a person who is trying hard to get away from himself, while maintaining a certain sense of humor about the mistakes that he has made along the way. All of the classic American folk themes are here: the wide open road, cheating, loving, losing, drinking, murdering ...
