Yo-Yo Ma's holiday album SONGS OF JOY AND PEACE admirably aims to be all-inclusive by featuring songs from the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic traditions, as well as feel-good popular favorites like "Here Comes the Sun" and "My Favorite Things." Guests include Diana Krall, James Taylor, Joshua Redman, Chris Botti, and Dave Brubeck, among others. The set ranges across religious traditions and styles, but a feeling of open-hearted warmth, along with Yo-Yo Ma's rich, swelling cello, provides the glue that binds this diverse group of musicians and songs.

Knowing how to strike while the iron is hot, the international all-male pop-opera revue Il Divo, assembled by AMERICAN IDOL's Simon Cowell, followed up its 2005 debut (and subsequent Christmas album) with yet another outing in early 2006. Here the dashing vocal quartet--Urs Buhler (Switzerland), Sebastien Izambard (France), Carlos Marin (Spain), and David Miller (U.S.)--stays true to its multi-lingual repertoire, offering up a suitably dramatic Spanish version of Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" ("Solo Otra Vez") and an English/French rendition of "I Believe in You" (with Celine Dion), among other numbers. While the arrangements on ANCORA are lush and majestic, they never overshadow the full, passionate voices of the foursome, who have clearly become used to working together as a powerful group.

A new set by British saxophonist and composer Andy Sheppard is always a welcome proposal, but his 13th album, and 14th release overall, also happens to be his debut for ECM. The music on MOVEMENTS IN COLOR is an ambitious, but utterly lyrical blend of Latin, Middle Eastern, and post-bop, and it is realized by musicians such as jazz guitarist John Parricelli (who plays acoustically here) and tabla player Kuljit Bhamra--members of Sheppard's regular quartet -- guitarist and electronic musician Eivind Aarset, and double bassist Arild Andersen, who also plays some electronics.
