PEACE BEYOND PASSION was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album.
On her second album, Me'Shell NdegeOcello continues to use a seamless blend of funk, jazz, rap and soul as a bed for her sociosexual observations. There's a spiritual bent, as well, to PEACE BEYOND PASSION, in songs that take on racism, homophobia and other societal ills. The centerpieces of the album are three songs named for books of the Bible: "Deuteronomy: Niggerman," "Ecclesiastes: Free My Heart" and "Leviticus: Faggot."
The music is less hip-hop-oriented than that on her debut, PLANTATION LULLABIES, and fleshed-out with heavier jazz nuances and '70s funk shadings. It's helped along in those directions by saxophonist Joshua Redman (he played on the debut, too) and one-time Prince guitarist Wendy Melvoin. Their interplay with NdegeOcello, who swings confidently on bass, blurs many musical lines. NdegeOcello adds a Curtis Mayfield soul spin to a version of Bill Withers' "Who Is He And And What Is He To You," the one cover song here. Chunks of wah-wah guitar juice the beat along, while Paul Riser's aggressive string arrangement and Billy Preston's organ ensure the authenticity of this reading.

Percy Faith recorded these two albums, Koga Melodies (1970) and Ryoichi Hattori Melodies (1972), expressly for the Japanese market, and neither has seen domestic release until now. The albums feature Faith's arrangements of music by two Japanese composers, Masao Koga and Ryoichi Hattori, both of whom integrated elements of Eastern and Western music into their pieces: Koga blended popular song styles while Hattori mixed jazz with traditional Japanese music. Although Faith was experienced in adapting and interpreting music from around the world, his complex and meticulous orchestral arrangements are firmly rooted in Western traditions, which makes these two albums very accessible to Western listeners who have no particular familiarity with or understanding of Eastern music. Koga's "Yawara (Softly)," for instance, is based on a strongly rhythmic two-chord guitar riff over which layers of strings play lazy, vaguely Eastern-sounding melody lines. Some people warrant the term genius, and Toni Iordache is one. He plays the tambal, or hammered dulcimer, like you've never heard it before, and your heart is in your mouth as you try to follow his lightning improvisations. But it's not just the speed, it's the way he structures and develops everything. Listen to the opener here, "Variatiuni Pe Tema 'Foaie Verde Si-O Craita'" and you'll be amazed. At hyperspeed he has each hand playing a separate but complementary melody. It seems impossible, but it's not. These tracks, from the 1960s and '70s, are showcases for his talent. But he's certainly not the only talent in his ensemble. The violin and accordion can match him, and you can only imagine what it must have been like live. On the slower tracks he squeezes emotion from his instrument in a way only a Romanian Gypsy can, finding the heart of an aching melody.
