Verdi - Aida Movie Review Great music, but..... The music is spectacular, BUT, although the staging at La Scala is massive and impressive, it is decidedly, oddly inappropriate = they depict Egypt as ancient and drab, with picturesque fallen temples and massive stone heads lying about -- I think of Aida as at the time of the height and glory of Pharaonic Egypt. Also, the costuming is elaborate and costly, but with a definite and equally distracting Italianate Renaissance flavour. There is also a scene in the Queen's chambers where naked children dancing in her bath-pools comes across as edging on child porn. Pavarotti is glorious to hear but hard to watch... his great bulking weight causes him to gasp and stand about with is mouth open sucking air, which gives him, rather than the look of a victorious general and future Pharaoh, the expression of an amazed tourist who has forgotten his camera and has lost his travellers cheques. I would opt for a CD of the music alone.

This magnificent production of Verdi's most-loved masterpiece was a triumphant success when it opened at La Scala in December 1985 and Luciano Pavarotti's long-awaited performance as Radames - his first in Italy - was greeted with rapturous applause. In this live recording of that production, Pavarotti heads an exceptional cast with Ghena Dimitrova, Maria Chiara, Nicolai Ghiaurov and Juan Pons all in peak form. Lorin Maazel's reading of the score shows a rare understanding of Verdi"s music.

Verdi - Aida review
$23.39 Ingmar Bergman has stated that THE MAGIC FLUTE had long since been an inspiration to him by the time he directed this movie version of an actual staging of Mozart's opera. In Emanuel Schikaneder's libretto--performed here in Swedish instead of German--Prince Tamino (Josef Köstlinger) is sent by the mysterious and powerful Queen of the Night (Birgit Nordin) to rescue her daughter, Pamina (Irma Urrila), from the sorcerer Sarastro (Ulrik Cold), who has kidnapped the girl. Tamino is aided on his mission by the bird catcher Papageno (Håkan Hagegård), an endearing buffoon (and arguably the opera's most popular character) who wants nothing more than to find himself a loving wife. The director presents a shortened version of the story, enhanced with a Freudian plot element (of sorts), while also giving the piece a slight overhaul for a more modern, less politically questionable feel. Bergman shows the goings-on onstage, often zooming in for close-ups of the performers' interaction with one another, interspersed with shots of individual faces in the audience. The actors were mostly chosen for their appearance and stage presence rather than their vocal prowess, though Hagegård has been singled out by critics for his fine performance and went on to enjoy a distinguished music career.
135 minute opera featuring Birgit Nordin, Erik Saeden, Jos ef Kostlinger and Ulric Cold. Ingmar Berman puts his indeli ble stamp on Mozart's exquisite opera in this sublime rende ring of one of the composer's best-loved works.

| | Xenakis - Legende D'Eer DVD (2005)
Verdi - Aida film
$24.25 The innovative mixed-media work of Iannis Xenakis is presented here. Composed in the late-1970s, this piece was especially commissioned to commemorate the opening of the Pompidou Centre in Paris. Designed to be played in a specially built room--which Xenakis conceived himself--the music was played over a three month stretch as the Pompidou opened its doors to the public for the first time. An impressive piece of work that illustrates Xenakis's unique contributions to the art and music worlds, this is a great way to experience the unique, singular vision of the now sadly deceased composer.
This DVD is a powerful 7-channel electroacoustic composition which Xenakis created in 1977-78 for playback in Le Diatope, a curvaceous architectural construction designed by the composer together with a visual component including laser lights. This work was composed for the opening of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, where it was performed for three months and seen by thousands of people. The sound materials stem from three sources: instrumental sounds, noises, and electronically generated sounds. Xenakis surrounds the work with a compilation of five texts, reflecting or reacting upon each other across distances in time, space, and culture which separate them.
