| | Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown Christmas CD (1977)
Night In Tunisia music CDs
$11.65 The fourth of four CD reissues taken from Art Pepper's three nights at the Village Vanguard in July 1977, as with the other releases, adds one selection ("Scrapple from the Apple") to the music of the original LP; all of the performances on this and the other sets have since been made available as part of a massive nine-CD box set. The great altoist was clearly excited to be playing at the famous New York club, and his rhythm section -- pianist George Cables, bassist George Mraz and drummer Elvin Jones -- consistently stimulates his imagination. This release has more variety than usual, for in addition to his alto playing (including a memorable unaccompanied solo on "Over the Rainbow"), Pepper switches to clarinet for the lengthy "More for Les" and interprets the ballad "These Foolish Things" on tenor. The nine-CD set is essential for Art Pepper fanatics, but those just wanting a taste of the great altoist's talents will be satisfied with this release. ...

$9.59 | | Miles Davis In A Silent Way CD (1969) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Night In Tunisia album
$6.75 John McLaughlin (electric guitar); Dave Holland (bass); Tony Williams (drums).
With IN A SILENT WAY, the elements of popular music, blues and electronics that had been implicit in Miles Davis' previous recordings now came center stage, and the trumpeter never looked back again. IN A SILENT WAY is Miles' BIRTH OF THE COOL/MILES AHEAD/KIND OF BLUE for the rock generation.
Gone are the rhythmic and harmonic trappings of bebop. In their place, Miles conjures a hypnotic, subliminal dance pulse and an airy, celestial drone of electric keyboards. Miles fell in love with the bell tones and flute-like textures of Fender/Rhodes electric pianos, and in the hands of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul (who doubles on organ), they create layer upon layer of choral texture, in great reverberant washes of color and counterpoint.
The juxtaposition of groove and impressionistic drone movements creates the inner tension in ...
| | Rosemary Clooney 70: A Seventieth Birthday Celebration CD (1998)
Night In Tunisia CD music
$8.19 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Rosemary Clooney has released more 20 albums on the Concord label in as many years, so this 70th birthday compilation is a more than welcome addition to her catalogue. With Ella and Sarah gone, she became the pre-eminent female singer of standards. Unlike many vocalists who are forced by failing voices to go cabaret, Clooney has retained the warm, musical quality which made her such an appealing singer ever since the days of "Hey There," reprised here in typically relaxed fashion.
All her Concord albums are well-recorded, unpretentious affairs, so there is wealth of prime material to choose from. The CD opens with a lovely version of James Taylor's "Secret Of Life," specially arranged by the great Johnny Mandel for this collection. Along the way we are ...
| | Steve Grismore Just Play CD (1993)
Night In Tunisia music CDs
$13.25 Sometimes fans of bebop and those who have not been paying close attention to more modern musical developments will claim that jazz has not evolved much during the past several decades. However recordings such as guitarist Steve Grismore's Just Play serve as proof of the opposite. Jazz has continued to move forward, year by year, even as some musicians are content to be creative in historic styles. On this set, Grismore and his quintet (co-leader tenor saxophonist Paul Scea, trumpeter Tim Hagans, bassist John Turner, and drummer Matt Wilson) use the innovations of the avant-garde as one of the ingredients in their unpredictable brand of post-bop jazz. While some tunes use standard chord changes part of the time (such as the blues "Jack With a Beer Back"), other tunes are free bop à la Ornette Coleman, with the ...
