| | Lou Reed New Sensations CD (1984) Reissue; Remastered
Overtones
$11.18 Lou Reed never struck anyone as one of the happiest guys in rock & roll, so some fans were taken aback when his 1984 album New Sensations kicked off with "I Love You, Suzanne," a catchy up-tempo rocker that sounded a lot like a pop tune. After reaffirming his status as one of rock's greatest poets with The Blue Mask and Legendary Hearts, what was Reed doing here? Lou was having a great time, and his pleasure was infectious -- New Sensations is a set of straight-ahead rock & roll that ranks with the most purely enjoyable albums of Lou's career. Reed opted not to work with guitarist Robert Quine this time out, instead overdubbing rhythm lines over his own leads, and if the guitars don't cut quite as deep, they're still wiry and in the pocket throughout, and the rhythm section of Fernando Saunders and Fred Maher rocks hard with a tough, sinewy groove. And while much of New Sensations finds Reed in a surprisingly optimistic mood, this isn't "Don't Worry, Be Happy" by any stretch of the imagination. On "Endlessly Jealous," "My Friend George," and "Fly Into the Sun," Reed makes it clear that happiness can be a hard-won commodity, and when Reed embraces life's pleasures on "Turn to Me" and ...

| | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
Overtones
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. Sometimes, Mayer dips too heavily toward the texture, but he can't resist a good, tight melody and builds the bulk of Battle Studies upon them: the elegant "Half of My Heart," the softly soulful "Perfectly Lonely." Here, Mayer is effortlessly seductive and somewhat irresistible, and it's easy to see why the ladies love cool John.
It's no secret that John Mayer is a ...
| | Generation X Perfect Hits 1975-1981 CD (1985)
Overtones
$8.95 Besides attempting to be the definitive Generation X compilation, Perfect Hits 1975 -- 1981 seeks to give the band punk credibility with its erroneous title (the band formed in late 1976). The collection wisely focuses on their vastly superior debut LP by incorporating two more songs than on The Best of Generation X, though "Wild Dub" should have been omitted. What's missing are subsequent album tracks like "Running With the Boss Sound," "Night of the Cadillacs," and "Revenge," all included on The Best of Generation X. The compilers try to please collectors, but miss the mark with a poorly mixed BBC version of "Day by Day," an unspecified take of John Lennon's "Gimme Some Truth" (marred by an out-of-tune guitar), and the obscurity "New Order," which is only a mediocre tune, at best. ~ Bart Bealmear
A digital equivalent to The Best of Generation X, Perfect Hits is a good if not perfect overview of the band's shaky career, assembled by Tony James and Billy Idol. On the down side, there's plenty of room on the disc for even more numbers that would have put everything one could want in one place -- the lack of "Running with the Boss Sound" in particular is a loss. Other cuts like "Valley of the Dolls" and "Night of the Cadillacs" may not have been as essential, but still should have been considered for inclusion. That flaw aside, Perfect Hits is still arguably the best way to get into the band, and for the casual listener will be more than sufficient. The whole thing starts off on an incongruous note with "Dancing with Myself," which later became one of Idol's initial solo smashes. While it was indeed originally a Generation X track (and a fantastic one at that), the recording itself was actually more like a punk jam session, with Terry Chimes on drums and Steve Jones and John McGeoch on guitars, among others. After that, it's down to business with the original lineup, kicking through their playfully entertaining cartoon punk with all the panache Idol ...

| | Marc Almond Stranger Things CD (2001) (Import) Import; France
Overtones
$15.75 This is the 13th solo release by Soft Cell's Marc Almond, featuring 12 tracks including "Come Out," "Moonbathe Skin," and "Dancer."
For his follow-up to Open All Night, Marc Almond chose to work with a new partner, keyboardist and Iceland native Johann Johannson. A musical figure of some renown in his home country, with both his own projects Lhooq and Dip and his work with other acts, including the Hafler Trio, Johannson brought a very consciously cinematic touch to Stranger Things. Call it his own take on John Barry-touched trip-hop, though with generally less emphasis on rhythm and more on the dramatic strings, which he often arranged himself, though others assist in that role too. Almond himself, meanwhile, sounds in absolutely excellent voice -- indeed, arguably he's at a technical peak, with little evidence of the emotional cracking that has often marked his work. Lyrically, his reflections on love and lust are some of his calmest -- there's sparks at points, like on "Come Out," but little of his memorable turns of phrase. As a result, Stranger Things falls somewhere in the middle range of Almond albums -- it's no disaster, by any means, but it's definitely an album rewarding repeated listenings rather than immediately connecting. Where Open All Night was dark, sly, and desperate, Stranger Things, a few songs aside like the brassy "Dancer" ...
