Purchase Early Years CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Taylor Swift Fearless CD (2008) Enhanced CD
Early Years album
$13.65 Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, FEARLESS--which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on FEARLESS: she's soft-spoken and considerate, a big sister instead of a big star. Nowhere is this truer than on "Fifteen," a kind warning for a teen to watch her heart sung from the perspective ...

| | Elvis Presley Christmas Duets CD (2008)
Early Years music CDs
$11.45 In the manner of Natalie Cole's UNFORGETTABLE, Elvis Presley's CHRISTMAS DUETS is a collection of Christmas songs that Elvis recorded throughout his career, remixed in 2008 to add new vocal parts by many of today's biggest female country stars, some of whom had not yet been born when Elvis died in 1977. Guest vocalists include Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride, Sara Evans, LeAnn Rimes, and Amy Grant. Other guests include Anne Murray and Olivia Newton-John, the only two vocalists here whose careers intersected ...
| | Johnny Cash American IV: The Man Comes Around CD (2002) Bonus DVD
Early Years songs
$11.99 "Give My Love To Rose" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
Includes a bonus DVD featuring a music video for the song "Hurt".
When the first volume of Johnny Cash's AMERICAN series appeared in 1994, it would have been difficult to predict its critical and commercial success, much less the fact that an illness-beset Cash would be turning out a powerful fourth installment of the series eight years later. Like its three predecessors, AMERICAN IV is a home-recorded, bare-bones Rick Rubin production wherein Cash tackles old classics by other writers as well as more contemporary tunes by artists from the rock world, with a smattering of his own new compositions thrown in. It's also arguably the strongest since the first volume.
Now that the novelty of hearing the Man in Black tackle tunes by the likes of Depeche Mode ("Personal Jesus") and Nine Inch Nails ("Hurt") has worn off, we can get past the gimmickry to fully appreciate the power of Cash's soul-baring interpretations. He brings an equal amount of gravitas ...
| | John Denver Definitive All-Time Greatest Hits CDs (2004) Bonus CD
Early Years album
$9.59 The title of this collection by the Jesus of 1970s soft pop makes no bones about its intentions. Fortunately, it delivers what it promises in spades. DEFINITIVE ALL-TIME GREATEST HITS chronicles the hit-packed career of John Denver without missing a trick. From his earliest, most folk-oriented material ("Leaving on a Jet Plane," a hit for Peter, Paul & Mary) to his more country-flavored compositions ("Take Me Home, Country Roads," the stomp-along "Thank God I'm a Country Boy"), we're given a full picture of Denver's abilities. Early-'80s duets with Placido Domingo ("Perhaps Love") and Emmylou Harris ("Wild Montana Skies") underscore both the far-reaching ripples Denver made in the music world and the full range of his own gifts. Such gentle, melodic ballads as "Annie's Song" and "Sunshine on My Shoulders" are the distilled essence of what made '70s AM radio tick, and will elicit instant nostalgia for the era when Denver's brand of quiet, graceful songcraft reigned supreme. ...

| | Louie Bellson Their Time Was The Greatest CD (1996)
Early Years music CDs
$9.59 The concept behind this CD was for Louie Bellson to pay tribute to a dozen drummers with a song apiece. The drummers who are saluted are Buddy Rich, Chick Webb, Big Sid Catlett, Jo Jones, Max Roach, Tony Williams, Dennis Chambers, Elvin Jones, Gene Krupa, Art Blakey, Shelly Manne, and Steve Gadd. Although Bellson plays quite well and his big band is colorful, most of the selections and the drumming sounds nothing like these drummers. Certainly one cannot imagine Dennis Chambers playing "Stix & Bones" or Steve Gadd playing in a similar way to Bellson on "All About Steve." However if one forgets the tribute aspect and just listens to the straight-ahead music, the date is successful. There are fine solos along the way from Bellson (who contributed ten of the 12 songs), tenors Pete Christlieb and Tommy Newsom, trumpeters Conte Candoli, Pete Candoli, and Snooky Young, trombonists Andy Martin and Thurman Green, and pianist Frank Strazzeri among others. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Fess Parker Great American Heroes CD (1996) (Import) Germany
Early Years songs
$21.29 Great American Heroes is a straight reissue of Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, Abe Lincoln and Other Great American Heroes, a 1964 album by Fess Parker devoted to Johnny Horton-esque historical folk songs about figures from early American history. Low on historical accuracy but loads of fun, all of these songs make their subjects sound like Paul Bunyan. Since Bear Family routinely cross-licenses material for their CDs, it would have been nice if they had added some of Parker's '50s recordings for Columbia (including his hit version of "Ballad ...
