CMH does all kinds of tributes to all kinds of people, like the Pickin' on the Wreckers: The Bluegrass Tribute, which was as beautiful as the original album. This set, however, is different altogether. This uncredited band ("the Homewreckers") uses a substandard female vocalist to do by-the-book versions of Gretchen Wilson tunes from her first two records. All one can say is: what's the point? The originals are so far superior to the crap found here that this is a good reason to distrust CMH from this moment out. The charts are sloppy, people are playing by ear and the rhythm section -- unlike the ones on Wilson's fine albums -- play so basically that these tunes come off as utterly lifeless. There is no conceivable reason to pick this up or even give it a spin. It couldn't fool a drunk who's three sheets to the wind. ~ Thom Jurek

Southern Rock Tribute To Gretchen Wilson
$13.69 The Hard to Find 45s on CD series is a very subjective -- and some would say guaranteed to start an argument or fight at your next party with loudmouth music freaks -- batch of compilation recordings that focuses on various aspects of genre-specific music and time periods. This set centers itself on country tunes that became crossover successes from the 1950s through the urban(e) cowboy era in 1982 and pop music that charted by country artists. Some tracks would have been impossible to exclude, such as Lefty Frizzell's number one country chart smash "Saginaw, Michigan," even if it scored a lowly number 85 on the pop chart. Same goes for Leroy Van Dyke's reading of Isaac Hayes' "Walk on By," which scored a number five in pop and didn't chart in the country Top 40, and Ferlin ...

Southern Rock Tribute To Gretchen Wilson
$9.69 The title of this collection by the Jesus of 1970s soft pop makes no bones about its intentions. Fortunately, it delivers what it promises in spades. DEFINITIVE ALL-TIME GREATEST HITS chronicles the hit-packed career of John Denver without missing a trick. From his earliest, most folk-oriented material ("Leaving on a Jet Plane," a hit for Peter, Paul & Mary) to his more country-flavored compositions ("Take Me Home, Country ...

| | Laika Good Looking Blues CDs (2000)
Southern Rock Tribute To Gretchen Wilson
$20.95 For a band that named itself after the first dog in outer space -- and previous albums called Sounds of the Satellites and Silver Apples of the Moon -- you'd think Laika would make spacey ambient music with a focus on quirky beats. And they do, sometimes. The emphasis, though, of Good Looking Blues, the London quartet's third album, is to give equal attention to Margaret Fiedler's smooth, somewhat gothic-and-soul-influenced vocals and the band's mixture of rock, slow electronic, and sit-on-your-couch dance music. Fiedler, who went to grade school with Liz Phair in Winnetka, Illinois and later played in a Smiths-sounding college band with Moby, speak-sings dark fictional stories about life's basic themes: love, sex, death, and work. But it's not quite that simple. For instance, on one of the ...
| | Electric Bonsai Band Primal Urges CDs (2001)
Southern Rock Tribute To Gretchen Wilson
$17.19 As Andrew Ratshin points out, the Electric Bonsai Band is neither electric nor a band. Instead, it is Ratshin's solo project, an offshoot of Seattle-based Uncle Bonsai. Primal Urges is a generous two-CD collection of old and new material, recorded live in 1998 and 1999. The title cut cleverly connects the desire of kids to own a cool car with the primal sexual urges that come part and parcel with being a teenager. Lyrics like "I got a poster of Farrah/and an urge to compete/I got a Schwinn with a buzzer/and a big banana seat" ...

Southern Rock Tribute To Gretchen Wilson
$12.95 A long tall Texan with a voice like George Strait (and, oddly, a distinct facial resemblance to Brian Eno, of all people), south Texas native Max Stalling has maintained a low-profile but steady career in the neo-traditionalist country scene for several years, but Topaz City is his potential breakthrough. Stalling's three previous albums were rough-edged D.I.Y. affairs, but the more polished Topaz City, his first album recorded with an outside producer in a proper studio, adds just enough ...
