Yearbook
$13.49 East Coast hardcore rap artist KJ-52 assumes the role of cool ringmaster over a myriad of coconspirators as he deftly deals sleek pop hooks, funky dance beats, and sharp-witted streetwise wordplay on Collaborations. As the title implies, KJ-52 teams with various mixers, melding humor and aggression with musical and lyrical analogies that are entertaining and heartfelt. "5th Element," which details the five essential components of hip-hop from the first-person perspective of a shell-toe Adidas, a microphone, a turntable, and a spray can, is ingenious and infectious. An a cappella diatribe, "Industry" takes dead aim at the conflicts between art and commerce, pointing fingers at fellow rappers and record company executives with equal venom. "ABC's and 1, 2, 3's" evokes ...
| | Spoken Moment Of Imperfect Clarity CD (2003)
Yearbook
$12.49 There was a time, not very long ago, when the term Christian rock was more or less a misnomer. There was Christian pop, which tended to be bland and faceless, and there were acts like Stryper, which was no less bland, but bland in a different way. Now Christian rock is the stealth bomber of rock & roll; turn to a Christian rock station and you'll hear death metal, indie rock, emo, math rock, and hip-hop of all shades and varieties, and the only way you'll know it's Christian is if you listen carefully (sometimes very carefully) to the lyrics, which still only give away the game about half the time. This makes for some of the most entertaining radio stations on the FM dial. However, not every band on those stations is as interesting in particular as the genre has become in general, and that brings us to Spoken, a group that used to play the harsher, screamier side of the field, and is now sidling back over to a more melodic pop area. Unfortunately, the result feels watered-down and tentative, even in those moments when singer Matt Baird gives in to his inner metalhead and shrieks out his spiritual and emotional angst (as he tends to do only briefly at a time, often only for a few words, which is actually a pretty effective touch). When he's not shrieking, he's singing in a high, petulant voice that sounds like a cross between Steve Perry and Geddy Lee, and the band rocks solidly but generically behind him. At times (like on the misbegotten "Promise"), ...
| | KJ-52 It's Pronounced Five Two CD (2003)
Yearbook
$15.05 "Now y'all be messin' up my name/It's not '52'/It don't stand for 'King James'." On his third full-length, Godorific rapper KJ-52 wants everyone to know where he comes from, and who it's all for. The 'K' stands for 'knowledge', and the 'J' 'justification' (like Romans 10:9, yo!), while '5' is the loaves and '2' is the fishes. Looks like there are even some haters in the Christian rap game. But KJ can't stay mad at anyone -- Christian, secular, or otherwise. "Whoop Whoop" rocks a stuttering PG-rated Dirty South rhythm under raps about bustin' mad prayers all night, while "Rock On" (featuring Pillar's Rob Beckley) turns up the amps and demands to see heads-a-noddin' on the dancefloor. There's even a Rob Base sample buried in there. As he did with 2002's Collaborations, producer Todd Collins quite effectively redirects the infectious energy of mainstream hip-hop to help his man, KJ, incite some faith-based booty shaking. And 52 himself finds new ways to blend positivity with pop culture -- "47 Pop Stars" shouts out to a heavenly host of rockers and rappers while trying to explain why the big J.C. is the master. Over the course of the record, he makes ...
