John R.T. Davies Collection: Vol. 1: Jazz Classics buy CD music Other than one number on a Jimmy Raney album from 1975, this set was the first joint recording by Jimmy and his son Doug Raney. The two similar-sounding guitarists team up with bassist Michael Moore and drummer Billy Hart on five standards (including "Chelsea Bridge," "Stolen Moments" and "Alone Together") and a couple of Jimmy's originals. The guitarists blend together quite well, and often one does not know who is soloing; the results should delight fans of cool-toned modern mainstream guitar. ~ Scott Yanow Personnel: Doug Raney, Jimmy Raney (guitar); ...

John R.T. Davies Collection: Vol. 1: Jazz Classics CD music Far from being the last refuge of jazz warhorses put out to pasture (as the story went among journalists in the 1990s), there was plenty of creativity and vitality on the Telarc roster then -- at least from the evidence of this anthology. The linking device behind this package is that every selection was recorded live in one New York City nightclub or another. Beyond that, the diversity and star power of the personalities who recorded for Telarc in the 1990s make it unwise to put an overall label on this two-CD set. Spanning the range from Lionel Hampton's truckin' re-creation of his swing-era signature jam "Flyin' Home" to the forward-looking Jim Hall's "Pan-O-Rama," almost everyone has something interesting to say (a sad exception is the fading Dizzy Gillespie, recorded only a year before his death). Jon Hendricks' musings on the flaws of "glamour girls" on "Contemporary Blues" is especially amusing, with sassy trumpet obbligatos from Wynton Marsalis. You also hear from Slide Hampton and the Jazz Masters, Al Grey's Centerpiece, Oscar Peterson in excellent pre-and-post-stroke form, Mel Tormé, James Moody, Dave Brubeck, the Jazz Messengers, Stéphane Grappelli, Harry "Sweets" Edison and the Golden Horns, and the Louie Bellson big band. Whether as a tour of the New York jazz club scene, a sampler of the veteran Telarc jazz roster of the 1990s, or an excuse to launch the shuffle-play feature on your CD changer during a party, this two-CDs-for-the-price-of-one jewel box provides good value. ~ Richard S. John R.T. Davies Collection: Vol. 1: Jazz Classics album for sale VIRTUOSI was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Classical Crossover Album. This CD features Gary Burton's vibes and Makoto Ozone's piano in ten classical duos with jazz improvisations. The two styles have never merged with more soul, spirit, or, well, virtuosity, and the material is rich and varied enough to please fans of both. It begins with one of Maurice Ravel's most popular compositions, Le Tombeau de Couperin, which in these masterful hands sparkles as it flows, reminding listeners why Ravel's harmonies inspired so many jazz musicians. The collection includes a thunderous Rachmaninoff prelude leavened with swing and a Latin feel, a Brazilian take on Brahms, the lush and passionate tango "Milonga," a gorgeous, extended medley from the opera Lakme with a familiar second part (arranged by Jay Kennedy, who worked on four of the tracks here), and a Samuel Barber gem where it's hard to tell the original from the improvisation. There are two beauties by George Gershwin, whose 1924 "Rhapsody in Blue" first collapsed the wall between jazz and classical music; Burton and Ozone add new bluesiness to his "Prelude No. 2" and comment brilliantly on his "Piano Concerto in F." On Sonata K20, they soften Scarlatti's starchy edges with sensuous Latin figures. In yet another pleasing segue -- this CD is very well-paced -- this is followed by a rare "Impromptu," all shifting, Debussy-like pastels until Ozone introduces some barrelhouse piano. The closer is Ozone's quiet, haunting "Something Borrowed, Something Blue," which was inspired by the project itself. Burton and Ozone produce a fulsome, totally satisfying sound, and their fluidity and grace are astonishing. Burton's extensive notes explain the selections and approach to each piece, deepening the experience. A stunning accomplishment, and highly recommended. ~ Judith Schlesinger Recorded at Bluejay Studios, Carlisle, Massachussets on August 14-15, 2001 and October 14-15, 2001. Last Call CD (2000)

John R.T. Davies Collection: Vol. 1: Jazz Classics buy CD music Using two sets of musical units, Frank Portolese's second album for the Chicago-based label, Southport, is a mix of five of the guitar player's originals, one classic, and five jazz standards. The use of two units here is not based on who happens to be available for the session, as so often is the case. Rather, the selection of personnel appears to be linked to the type of music that Portolese wants to present. For a more avant garde, creative, improvisational, introspective set, Portolese uses Brian Sandstrom on bass and Rusty Jones on drums for a pianoless trio, doing some artful work on such tunes as "Burn Unit" and Joe Henderson's "Inner Urge." Both of these tracks feature the drums of Rusty Jones in interesting and sometimes daring interplay between him and Portolese. Initially, they start off in different directions, like a heated argument between a couple of old friends using their instruments to make their points. Then quite suddenly, the dispute is resolved and they get back together again, ending the cut in musical accord. Brian Sandstrom's bass is the subtle but articulate cornerstone for this unit. That this group can also wax rhapsodically is shown on "The Dance," where Portolese and Jones exchange musical ideas but in a far less frenetic atmosphere. Jones is clearly from the Elvin Jones school of drumming, where he extends his participation far beyond time-keeping. Contrast these performances with the rest of the cuts where Portolese is joined by Dave Marr's bass, Tim Davis' drums and Larry Luchowski's piano for more straight-ahead renderings. On "These Foolish Things," Portolese gets enchantingly romantic with his clean-sounding, downtempo rendition of this standard from the Great American Songbook, with Luchowski's piano getting plenty of attention. Miles Davis' "Milestones" is done at an exhilarating tempo in contrast to the almost somber, thoughtful rendition of Wayne Shorter's "Virgo." There's a brief recollection of "Fugue for Tinhorns" from Guys and Dolls during the Portolese penned "Room 608," which swings. The last track, appropriately titled "Last Call," is a vehicle for Portolese's solo virtuosity. Portolese is obviously familiar with those guitarists who fostered the melodic approach to the guitar, like Tal Farlow and Mundell Lowe. In doing so, Portolese avoids the colder tones of the more modern players to create a warm musical experience for the listener. This is a fine album and is recommended. ~ Dave Nathan Recorded at Sparrow Sound Design Studios, Chicago, Illinois in February 1999. Includes liner notes by Neil Tesser. Personnel includes: Frank Portolese (guitar); Larry Luchowski (piano); David Marr, Brian Sandstrom (bass); Rusty Jones, Tim Davis (drums). Producers include: Bradley Parker-Sparrow, Joanie Pallatto.
