Aqui Se Puede is notable for being a good salsa album -- at least what one could hope for from 1987 Fania. Not at all an old master's weak attempt to keep current, it is instead salsa to last for the rest of the century. Barretto seems content to provide his excellent conga underpinning, and the real stars are the singers and other players, particularly the two arrangers. In short, treat it as a salsa record unless you are a Barretto completist. ~ Tony Wilds

STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. The popping showcase for solos that is "Serakel" is nonetheless a grooving post-bop tune with a joyous klezmer lyric line. The sheer shimmering beauty of "Psisya," which moves from jazz ballad to bossa to Hebrew folk song and back again, is stunning. While Stolas is not completely "inside," it is far more so than most have a right to expect. Tjalkuri blends irresistible hooks, socially-conscious lyrics, and arrangements that reflect a feel for his native Australia. The project veers musically from straight-ahead rockers to twang-and-dobro flavored numbers to jazz-tinged pieces. "Tjalkuri" is a stunning introduction to this one-of-a-kind recording artist. Australian pop/rocker Broughton Mitchell (a/k/a Tjalkuri), lived for time with an aboriginal tribe. During this time, a member of the tribe named Mitchell died, and Broughton was asked to take a different name in honor of the deceased. He was given the name Tjalkuri. His musical adventures have taken him to all parts of the Australian continent, writing and playing with musicians with a wide variety of backgrounds, from western-influenced pop/rockers to traditional native musicians with aboriginal and other indigenous influences. These different flavors are all captured in his songs and performances.
Broughton "Tjalkuri" Mitchell's music, as heard on his self-titled debut album (released in 1996 in his native Australia, and picked up for U.S. distribution four years later), is a familiar Australian brand of rock and folk-rock that American listeners who know Midnight Oil, and even the more pop-sounding Men at Work, will recognize. Like the latter, Tjalkuri writes propulsive tunes, played with pop energy by five-piece rock band; like the former, his lyrics sometimes explore social concerns bluntly. "Petrol Is Poison" states its position in its title, for example, while "Drinking" is opposed to liquor. In addition, Tjalkuri's adenoidal voice is often reminiscent of Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett (though it also sometimes recalls the Cure's Robert Smith as well). His songs range from the near-instrumental funk workout of "Take That Bait" to "Anything New," gutbucket rock ...
