Mastercuts: The Essential Quincy Jones
$14.29 On their Criss Cross follow-up to Upward and Onward, One For All mainly concentrate on original group member compositions, continuing to hone the neo-bop these musicians have become known for over the past decade. The Long Haul was recorded after a single gig in New York, keeping the improvisatory freshness of the session bright. While the members of One For All perform in this ...

| | Chuck Loeb Music Inside CD (1996)
Mastercuts: The Essential Quincy Jones
$14.29 A splash of variety and all-star panache elevates Chuck Loeb's The Music Inside above the typical play it safe pop-jazz date. Smooth overall but just punchy enough in all the right spots, the disc tends to surprise at the very moment its grooves start sounding too comfortable. After a relaxing take on Babyface's languid "Breathe Again," for instance, Loeb goes the streetsmart bluesy route with the horn drenched "Steffi's Strut." Other cool continental shifts include a breezy Eastern tinge, a crazed Latin attitude with the help of Michel Camilo's trademark ivory bounce, and even tinges of ...

| | Bebo Valdes We Could Make Such Beautiful Music Together CD (2004) (Import) Argentina
Mastercuts: The Essential Quincy Jones
$15.75 This joint effort by revered Cuban composer/pianist Bebo Valdes and Uruguayan violin player Federico Britos features 14 intriguing tracks, including "Noche Azul," "I Only Have Eyes for You," and "Adios Nonino."
The piano and violin have been well matched and married in a variety of musical settings, from small ensembles to orchestral, classical, jazz, Latin, and to a lesser degree other genres. For veteran Cubans Valdes and Britos, the combination could not be more heartwarming, effusive, bright and yes, beautiful. This recording of 14 duets between these masters expresses all the emotional impact and romantic notions one could dream for and should expect. A program mixed with jazz standards, Latin evergreens and two originals, all in ballad or semi-balladic form, the two mix improvisations and well-known melodies with danzon, tango ...
| | Chieli Minucci Got It Goin' On! CD (2005)
Mastercuts: The Essential Quincy Jones
$14.45 Chieli Minucci, the leader of Special EFX, is an excellent guitarist with a style sometimes hinting at early George Benson. His brand of crossover music has catchy melodies, danceable rhythms and concise solos. Got It Goin' On has short spots for three different crossover saxophonists (Jeff Kashiwa, Kim Waters and Marion Meadows) but the focus is mostly on the leader and the appealing ensembles. While Minucci's individual originals are not particularly memorable, his music is accessible and works well both as background music and for dancers. ~ Scott Yanow
