Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; English Subtitles; Special Edition John Wayne stars as the sheriff of a small western town who arrests a murderer and then must contend with the aggressive efforts of the killer's brother to free him before the state marshall arrives. Surrounding the town, the villains make repeated runs at the tiny jailhouse where their comrade is incarcerated. The sheriff is left to defend the territory almost single-handedly -- his only aid being a rag-tag crew of misfits, including a drunk, an old cripple, a saloon woman, and a singing teenager. The plot's tensions build to one of the most explosive finales in cinema history. No-nonsense Texas border sheriff John T. Chance (John Wayne) fights off ruthless mercenary gunmen in order to keep a murderer in custody. A ragtag band of volunteers, consisting of a singing kid, a toothless old man, a recovering alcoholic, and a spunky woman, assist. Contains an interesting sing-along interlude among the group, and yes, the Duke participates. Shot in Technicolor. Rio Bravo Reviews: 5 stars out of 5 -- "Warm, witty and endlessly welcoming....It's arguably the quintessential Hawks flick."-- Matthew Leyland, Total Film "Hawks' picture is about standing up for yourself, embracing responsibility and acting with integrity....The film is subtle, good-natured, funny and charming."-- Nev Pierce, Empire Rio Bravo | List Price | $12.97 (You save $4.88) | | Studio | Warner Home Video | | Orig Year | 1959 | | All Time Sales Rank | 3094 | | CD Universe Part number | 7395045 | | Catalog number | 114534 | | Discs | 2 | | Release Date | May 22, 2007 | | Rating | Not Rated | | Running Time | 247 Minutes | | Additional Info | Widescreen; Dubbed; Special Edition; Subtitled | | Movie Details | Color; Widescreen; Dubbed; Special Edition; Subtitled |
Rio Bravo Movie Review My Favorite Western The box set DVD has a bright picture but it isn't cleaned up of black spots that occasionally appear. It is also cut for 16 by 9 TVs. So the original 2:25 to 1 has been changed. It doesnt hurt the movie but I expected the original aspect. On my large screen TV the film quality was lacking in spots.
There are 8 reproductions of lobby cards and the Dell Comic book reproduced.
There are no outakes except in the trailer where Rick Nelson speaks to you and Dean Martin voice is off screen.
This was a major dissapointment for me.
The second disc has 2 Features of Howard Hawks and a travel destination of the OLD TUSON Arizona Movie set, where this movie and others were filmed. I enjoyed learning about Old Tuscon.
No additional out takes or bloobers or even an outake of The Dean Martin Show with John Wayne.
Although this is one of my favorite movies of all time and my Favorite Western the DVD extras were not well thought out, so they were left out.
I waited 47 years for this special and whomever was responsible for the DVD extras failed. I liked the lobby cards and The Comic Reproduction was a surprise.
Another error was no commentary from Angie Dickenson !!! Comments by horror man John Carpenter. What a mistake not having Angie. Angie I love you!

part of a symphony Have always loved this film even when I got it mixed up with El Dorado. Often considered a trilogy with Dorado and finally Rio Lobo, it is actually a tetrology starting with Red River. Different angles on similar plot, parallel characters, repeated dialogue (some originating in To Have And Have Not--especially from the woman, i.e. from Bacall's character), Walter Brennan in Red and Bravo (out of Have/Have Not) and even insistence on a young actor--Montgomery Clift, Ricky Nelson, James Caan, young Mitchum and Estrada as a partial foil and apprentice to Wayne. More than remakes, they are "progressions". From Red with no law except their own to a law that needs a drunk to bend the law to a law that is drunk that needs a maimed gunslinger deputy, to finally a law that is lawless in the finale, Rio Lobo. An older Howard Hawks has almost come full circle--very odd. Is this the director's lake of faith in the State--a return to "grass roots Democracy"? I repeat, very odd. Or maybe I'm the one that is odd. Watch Red River, then Rio Bravo, then El Dorado and lastly Rio Lobo (that's a lot of water). Then go back to To Have And Have Not for the real genesis of so much of the this Hawks tetrology. Watch the John Ford cavalry trilogy, look for the same kind of looking at the same vase from different angles--I don't think that you will that that is the case there. Classic movie by Howard Hawks and the Duke. A Classic Western written and directed by Howard Hawks and starring the Duke at his zenith as an actor. Great supporting performances by Dean Martin and the always entertaining Walter Brennan. A morality play about self reliance and good vs. evil. Hawks is also at his zenith as a director opening the movie with plenty of action and not a word of dialogue for over five minutes. Hawks takes the successful formula of Red River and weaves together a cast of entertaining characters you can watch for hours. You will watch this movie more than once. $7.69 In the town of El Dorado, wealthy landowner Bart Jason (Ed Asner) is embroiled in a struggle with the MacDonald family, who own a large amount of land just outside town lines. Jason hires gunman Cole Thornton (John Wayne) to scare the MacDonalds in hope that they'll back down. Cole is pleased to discover that his old friend J.B. (Robert Mitchum) is now the sheriff of the town. The sheriff warns Cole that involvement with the crooked Jason will get him arrested. Further circumstances entwine the hired gun with the MacDonald family, and he sets out to destroy Jason. Hawks' unheralded western, with a fine script by Leigh Brackett (THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK), features plot similarities to his earlier classic RIO BRAVO.
This 126 minute feature film is a DVD starring John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and James Caan.

Rio Bravo review
$10.25 John Wayne reprises his role as Rooster Cogburn, the eye-patched, whiskey-guzzling deputy marshall from TRUE GRIT. While on the trail of a gang of outlaws led by his old partner Hawk (a truly villainous Richard Jordan), Rooster teams up with bible-thumping missionary Eula Goodnight (Katherine Hepburn) to avenge the murder of her father by the gang. The chemistry between Wayne and Hepburn is palpable as barbs fly between the grumpy gunman and feisty missionary, and Strother Martin delivers a sparkling cameo.

$6.55 Frank Pierce (Bruce Cabot) is a ruthless man bent on manipulating the cattle business towards his own wealth and prosperity. When Taw Jackson (John Wayne), an honest rancher, interferes with his plans, Pierce imprisons him and confiscates his gold-filled land. Escaping the prison, Taw plans a raid on Pierce's heavily guarded pay roll carriage, but not if Pierce has anything to say about it. After assembling a group of misfits and hired guns, Taw runs into serious opposition when he encounters the madcap gunslinger, Lomax (Kirk Douglas). Sent by Pierce to stop the raid, Lomax winds up taking a liking to Taw, and they decide to join forces and stage a raid on Pierce's WAR WAGON.
Famous for its fighting scenes between John Wayne and Kirk Douglas, WAR WAGON is quintessential of its genre. WAR WAGONS features astonishing stunts and pyrotechnics. Advanced for its time (it was released in 1969) one would think Kennedy produced it in the mid '70s. The climactic end scene which pits Douglas and Wayne against a Gatling gun has spawned similar scenes in RED DAWN and YOUNG GUNS. WAR WAGON is a modern and triumphant film.

| | Rio Lobo DVD (1970) Widescreen
Rio Bravo movie DVD
$8.59 Howard Hawks's final film once again teams him with John Wayne, with a script by Leigh Brackett (who also wrote his EL DORADO and RIO BRAVO). The time is just after the end of the Civil War. Wayne is Union Colonel Cord McNally, who is teamed with two Confederate soldiers he captured during the war in order to take down a thieving bootlegger. Their travels take them to a small town being held in terror by an evil Sheriff. McNally and his crew decide to help the townspeople with their own brand of justice. With a considerable amount of humor and Hawks's reliable formula in which a motley band of men unite for a common cause, RIO LOBO is a fitting conclusion to both his western trilogy and a distinguished career.

$8.55 John Wayne is Jacob McCandles, an aging cowboy in an Old West that is on the verge of modernization. When his eight-year-old grandson is kidnapped by a violent gang led by the evil John Fain (Richard Boone), Jacob's estranged wife (Maureen O' Hara) enlists his help to rescue the boy. Jacob and his three sons (one of whom is portrayed by Wayne's real-life son Patrick) set out to bring the gang to justice. This late-period Wayne western is characterized by a gritty realism not present in most of his earlier works. The surprisingly graphic violence is also tempered with abundant humor.

| | Frida DVDs (2002)
Rio Bravo movie DVD
$10.35 Brilliant colors that bring Frida Kahlo's Mexico City to vibrant life combine with a captivating performance by Salma Hayek to make director Julie Taymor's FRIDA a fascinating film. Starting and ending with Frida on her deathbed, the film spans the famous painter's life from her teenage years to her death at the young age of 47. From start to finish, Frida is portrayed as a relentlessly energized, self-righteous, headstrong, assertive woman. At the age of 18, Frida was horribly injured in a bus accident. Though she learned to walk again, she lived her life in physical agony, enduring multiple surgeries, and eventually needing a wheelchair. Yet her condition did not stop her from having an exciting, tumultuous life as the wife of famed artist and womanizer Diego Rivera, who mentored her in her own work and encouraged her passions. Frida had liberal views and socialist politics. She was bisexual and promiscuous. She drank, abused painkillers, sang and danced, and fearlessly poured her pain and beauty into her paintings. Taymor has created a lively and dramatically emotive film with FRIDA, capturing her endearing resiliency with color, music, and, of course, art.
