(3 Customer Reviews)
A large-ish ensemble led by pianist Thomas Lauderdale and singer China Forbes, Pink Martini is maddeningly, wonderfully eclectic in a way that few other groups could hope to be. Drawing from Parisian pop, jazz, the European cabaret tradition, Latin rhythms, and pre-1960 Hollywood film soundtracks, all combined with urbanity and elan, this Martini will leave the listener both shaken and stirred. A fab bonus: Jimmy Scott, the legendary and unique jazz vocalist, appears on "Tea For Two."

Hey Eugene!
$12.39 I REMEMBER MILES won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Their friendship and admiration for each other's music lasted through the years, and Shirley Horn's 1991 recording YOU WON'T FORGET ME, was one of the last recordings Miles ...

| | Suicide First Album CDs (1977)
Hey Eugene!
$12.55 Seven years after the duo's inception, Suicide's debut album finally sneaked out in 1977 on the coat tails of the nascent New York punk scene. If its aim had been to confuse, startle, or repulse, SUICIDE succeeded in spades. By the same token, if a part-time sculptor and avant-garde jazz musician form a two-chord synthesizer duo and call it Suicide, commercial considerations are presumably low on their list of priorities. SUICIDE was a record destined to have future journalists reaching for words like "seminal". Synth duos start here.
SUICIDE's bleak, one-act plays of violence and sexual deviance, and that lo-fi monotone punctuated ...

| | Water Rats Gathering CD (2004)
Hey Eugene!
$16.05 Perhaps it's the gap between British and American English, or just the obtuseness of some of the annotation -- at least, where non-local reference points are concerned -- but this reviewer, having listened to this CD three times and read the notes more than once, still isn't quite sure what the "Water Rats" are, based on the information presented here, or what this benefit CD is a benefit for. But it is generally magnificent music, made by an astonishing array of players covering a gamut of styles from folk to skiffle to '70s pop/rock and classical -- and even prog rock -- all hook-laden and memorable. Brian May's ...
