When a band goes a decade without providing a new album, the question that immediately comes to mind is, "In what respects has the band evolved since the last album?" Some bands will evolve radically in the course of ten or 11 years, while others won't change a bit -- and for others, the truth is somewhere in the middle of those two extremes. A good example of the latter is Little Aida, whose 2007 release, Mad Country, is their first album since 1996's Confessions. Back in 1996, this Australian band was frequently compared to Portishead (a good, if imperfect, comparison) and offered alternative pop/rock that was greatly influenced by trip-hop, hip-hop, and the downtempo/chillout side of electronica. But on Mad Country, the club-friendly outlook of Confessions is gone and has been replaced by a much more guitar-minded approach that is relevant to both alternative pop/rock (especially the shoegazer bands) and folk-rock; the Portishead comparison is no longer applicable. And yet, Little Aida still sound like Little Aida. Their material is still decidedly melancholy; lead singer Tessa Rubinstein still favors a girlish, waifish vocal style; and Little Aida remain a band that would rather float than rock. The most intriguing thing about Rubinstein is her ability to sound both girlish and world-weary at the same time; no one will accuse her of having a big, womanly type of voice, but she certainly isn't girlish in a Radio Disney kind of way. On a technical level, Rubinstein doesn't have huge chops, but she still gets her emotional points across on airy, reflective offerings such as "The Dam Is Broken" and "Horses." Mad Country is a pleasing, worthwhile effort that illustrates Little Aida's ability to evolve without losing their identity. ~ Alex Henderson

With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs ...

This is a really demented release with good -- if often sparse -- instrumentation. The music ranges from authentic-sounding garage rock to Ween-like vocals with Casio, as Danny Cohen unwinds a cotton-candy spiral of unique, disturbed, and sometimes ridiculously immature lyrics ("they burned the tortilla intentionally...all because I complained that there was no cheese"). While listening to this cavalcade of dementia, Nick Cave, Frank Zappa, Frank Pahl, and other eccentrics are called to mind by Cohen's different vocal deliveries. Likewise, there are instrumental details that alternately recall the organ sound of Mr. Quintron, the Casio popscapes of Gok recordings, the sound of John Frusciante's first solo album, and various '60s garage rock.
