Blizzard Beasts, Immortal's third album, sounds like a rush job when compared to the rest of the band's triumphant catalog. The majesty of the group's songwriting is buried in the album's subpar production values, which render the potentially brilliant hyperspeed riffing and drum battery gutless and ineffectual. "Nebular Ravens Winter," "Suns That Sank Below," and "Frostdemonstorm" offer a few decent riffs and solid arrangements, and six-minute epic "Mountains of Might" leans toward the black-metal-by-way-of-German-thrash genius of subsequent albums -- but the rest of the record shows little progression from predecessor Battles in the North. Ultimately, Blizzard Beasts should be chalked up as a transitional album in Immortal's mighty career, being the last to feature guitarist and founding member Demonaz (he quit after a bout with tendonitis); bassist/vocalist Abbath would take over six-string and songwriting duties, ultimately leading the band out of blastbeat hell and across more broad-scoped, epic terrain. Why aren't there more recordings like Fly Away Little Bird? Perhaps it's because there aren't more musicians of this stature. The studio reunion of the legendarily experimental Jimmy Giuffre 3 in 1992 was reissued in 2003 on the French Sunnyside label and is a radical departure from anything the trio had done in the past. These studio apparitions of the band are their most seamlessly accessible while being wildly exploratory. In addition to the consummate improvisations and compositions by Giuffre (title track, a redone "Tumbleweed"), the tender meditations by Steve Swallow ("Fits" and "Starts"), and the bottom-register contrapuntal improves by Paul Bley ("Qualude"), this is a trio recording that uses standards such as "Lover Man," a radically and gorgeously reworked "I Can't Get Started," "Sweet and Lovely," and "All the Things You Are" to state hidden textural possibilities inside chromatic harmony. Spencer Wiggins had the poor fortune of being a great soul singer in a place where and at a time when there were more than enough of those to go around -- namely Memphis, TN, during the mid-'60s when Stax Records was the biggest name in town, Willie Mitchell's Hi Records was on the rise, and Atlantic had practically made the town its second home. While Wiggins had a strong enough voice to have found a home at any of those labels, he was discovered by Quinton Claunch of Goldwax Records, and while Claunch was a talented songwriter and producer, his label didn't have the juice to push many of its acts to stardom (the tragic James Carr being a rare exception). Listening to The Goldwax Years, a collection of 22 numbers Wiggins cut for the label between 1966 and 1969, it's not hard to imagine that with better breaks Wiggins could have become one of the major soul stars of the era; his voice could swing from quiet pleading to full-on soul bellow without seeming excessive either way, his sense of phrasing and working the drama of a song was strong indeed, and the production on his sessions (usually by Claunch and Rudolph V. Russell) was terrific, able to conjure up shades of Big City cool when needed while usually offering a healthy portion of Deep South passion.
