There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley--a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary--is one of them. The idea that a single-disc collection could represent the depth, breadth, and power of Marley's achievement is far-fetched, but LEGEND makes an excellent attempt. Every single one of its tracks is outstanding, and the artist's different faces--revolutionary ("Get Up Stand Up"), romantic ("Is This Love"), devout Rastafarian ("Buffalo Soldier"), and prophet ("One Love/People Get Ready") are equally represented.
In addition to his moving message of love and unity, Marley is a master songwriter, as the timelessness of songs like "Stir It Up," "I Shot the Sheriff," and the gorgeous, poignant "Redemption Song" proves. Of course, a true sampling of Marley's output would require some early ...

| | Irene Cara What A Feelin' CD (1983) (Import) Canada
Positiva Vibracion music CDs
$19.89 As a general rule, you would expect that an album featuring a gold-selling number one hit, a Top Ten hit, and two Top 40 follow-ups would itself be a considerable success, but Irene Cara's second album had trouble staying among the 100 best-sellers. Why? That chart-topper, "Flashdance...What a Feeling," had come the previous spring, and most people who wanted to own it had purchased it either as a single or on the multi-platinum soundtrack album. Plus, Cara never established a base beyond her individual hits. This wasn't surprising, really, since, despite her participation as singer and co-lyricist, Cara essentially was the mouthpiece of Euro-disco producer Giorgio Moroder on these recordings. Thus, although she was all over the airwaves in 1983-1984, and although this album contained all five of her chart entries from the period, Cara herself failed to benefit over the long term, and as a glut for this kind of material set in, she was left behind. ~ William Ruhlmann
The vocalist's hit 1983 album for Geffen featuring the smash 'Flashdance... What A Feeling' (which topped the charts for six consecutive weeks!), plus the top 40 hits 'Why Me?' (12in Mix) and 'The Dream (Hold On To Your Dream)'.Also features four bonus tracks, 'Breakdance' (Extended Remix), 'The Dream' (Dance Remix) and two mixes of 'Flashdance... ...
| | Massive Attack No Protection CD (1995)
Positiva Vibracion songs
$9.29 NO PROTECTION is Mad Professor's dub version of the Massive Attack album PROTECTION.
Although variously labeled as hip-hop, trip-hop and soul, the distinctive sound forged by Massive Attack often resembles a more innovative take on the lover's rock style of reggae that launched the careers of Caron Wheeler and Maxi Priest. (Massive Attack in turn put themselves on the map as a group with tunes voiced by old-time reggae crooner Horace Andy). Viewed in that light, it seems a natural decision for the group to invoke the time-honored Jamaican tradition of the dub album, a group of tracks (taken in this case from their critically acclaimed PROTECTION) reworked by a mixing board auteur like Mad Professor.
A second generation digital offspring of original dub pioneers like King Tubby and Lee "Scratch" Perry, the professor's concoctions bear only a distant relationship to the analog dub which emanated from Tubby's reel-to-reel ...
| | Ub40 Labour Of Love CD (1983)
Positiva Vibracion album
$8.85 This is UB40's "tribute" album with cover versions of their favorite songs from 1969 through 1972.
Playing reggae and supporting the UK Labour Party during a decade of Thatcherism and racism demonstrated that these chaps had morals and guts. They eventually prospered (good ultimately conquers bad) and they can now look back and taste their achievement. In the UK, UB40 have done as much to popularize reggae as Bob Marley did for the rest of the world. This is their most refined ...

| | Muhal Richard Abrams Things To Come From Those Now Gone CD (1976)
Positiva Vibracion songs
$9.95 The intriguingly titled Things to Come From Those Now Gone is a hodgepodge of an album with varying combinations of musicians producing work that ranges from the weirdly bad to the astonishingly beautiful. Abrams is often at his best when he simply allows his deep melodic sense to take over and, on the opening duo with flutist Wallace McMillan as well as "Ballad for Old Souls," a trio for piano, bass, and vibes, the haunting, nostalgic effect is lovingly realized. Following a brief, delirious horn blowout is one of the oddest things Abrams ever recorded, a feature for singer Ella Jackson, who wavers off pitch so aggravatingly that it can make the listener leap for the volume control. Then again, it's possible that she's merely singing the piece the way the composer intended. If so, it's a lugubrious art song indeed. "1 and 4 Plus 2 and 7" is the kind of overly dry, academic sounding exercise that Abrams would return to often in his career. But then comes the closer, "March of the Transients." There may not be a single better example of "freebop" as practiced by members of the AACM than this amazing composition. A rip-roaring head, strutting proudly for all it's worth, is fleshed out by a string of utterly outstanding, on-the-mark solos, all impelled onward by the glorious drums of Wilbur Campbell. It's a performance that any bop master would be proud of and brought off with a sparkle ...
