Djavan: Programa Ensaio video
$8.35 Performers include: Gal Costa, Antonio Carlos Jobim, The Jobims (Elizabeth, Ana and Paulo), Maucha Adnet, Paulo Braga, Danilo Caymmi, Simone Caymmi, Sebastion Neto, Jaques Morelemnbaum. Personnel: Gal Costa (vocals); Antonio Carlos Jobim (vocals, piano); Maucha Adnet, Ana Lontra Jobim, Simone Caymmi (vocals); Jaques Morelenbaum (cello); Danilo Caymmi (flute); Paulo Braga (drums). This live date, recorded in 1987, features Brazilian music icon Antonio Carlos Jobim paired with Tropicalia diva Gal Costa. Jobim's gravelly voice might sound a bit worse for wear compared with his recordings from the `60s and early `70s, but RIO REVISITED still pleases with its offerings of classic Jobim compositions such as "One Note Samba," "Desafinado," and "Wave." Accompaniment from a large ensemble, and the contributions of the dynamic Costa, make this an engaging listen through and through. The set was remastered and reissued in 2008. Recorded at a video taping in the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles as part of the Jazzvisions series, this was Jobim's live act shortly after he resumed touring in the mid-'80s. At the time, Jobim struck an avuncular, almost casually anti-show-business presence seated before a grand piano, presiding ...

Personnel: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Jean-Luc Ponty (violin, baritone violin); Ian Underwood (flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Sal Marquez (trumpet, background vocals); Bruce Fowler (trombone); George Duke (keyboards, synthesizer); Ruth Underwood (vibraphone, marimba, percussion); Tom Fowler (bass instrument); Ralph Humphrey (drums). Love it or hate it, Over-Nite Sensation was a watershed album for Frank Zappa, the point where his post-'60s aesthetic was truly established; it became his second gold album, and most of these songs became staples of his live shows for years to come. Whereas the Flo and Eddie years were dominated by rambling, off-color comedy routines, Over-Nite Sensation tightened up the song structures and tucked sexual and social humor into melodic, technically accomplished heavy guitar rock with jazzy chord changes and funky rhythms; meanwhile, Zappa's growling new post-accident voice takes over the storytelling. While the music is some of Zappa's ...

Recording information: France (04/16/1964-??/??/1977); Paris, France (04/16/1964-??/??/1977); The Olympia, Paris, France (04/16/1964-??/??/1977). Photographers: Jean-Pierre Leloir; Pedro DeMoraes. When it was originally released in 1964, this set of music was a bit of a hit, selling over 100,000 copies. Brazilian guitarist-composer Baden Powell was working regularly in France at the time and he is joined on various selections by a French rhythm section and an orchestra. There are also some unaccompanied guitar solos. Listened to over four decades later, much of the music comes across as being overly sweet, safe and sleepy. Powell plays well enough, but the lack of mood variation and the unimaginative arrangements are unfortunate. Since the guitarist rarely gets beyond the melody, the overall results are pleasant background music, nice but predictable. [Universal reissued Le Monde Musical de Baden Powell on CD in 2005.] ~ Scott Yanow In the early '60s when many Brazilian ...

Djavan: Programa Ensaio video
$9.59 Personnel: Luiz Bonfá; Maria Toledo (vocals); Doum, Hélcio Milito (drums). Recorded in 1965 and produced by Bobby Scott, Braziliana is the first American collaborative effort between Brazilian composer and guitarist Luiz Bonfá and his wife, vocalist Maria Toledo. The set consists of 14 Bonfá originals and highlights every aspect of his compositional landscape, from sambas to jazzy pop songs, neo-classical pieces for guitar, and his modern attempts to integrate Brazilian folk forms. Certainly there was an ulterior motive for Philips recording this album with Scott -- the worldwide success of Astrud and Joao Gilberto's collaborations with Stan Getz. His arrangements lend a certain modern jazz tenet to some of these tunes -- such as the beautiful"Cavaquinho," with Toledo scatting ever so elegantly amid a small jazz combo that features the great drummer Hélcio Milito backed by a very young Dom Um Romao. But given the utter range and sophistication in Bonfá's tunes, it's hard to accept without critical consideration ...
