Lend Me Your Ears
$14.44 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed to Jones' choice of producer, Jacquire ...

| | Harry Connick, Jr Your Songs CD (2009)
Lend Me Your Ears
$13.79 Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic "And I Love Her" gets a kind of '70s Latin lounge feel with classical guitar flourishes. However, Connick isn't only concerned with reworking tunes in unexpected ways; on the contrary, longtime fans of Connick's swinging neo-crooner vocals will be pleasantly surprised by his straightforward takes on "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Some ...
| | Art Pepper Smack Up CD (1960)
Lend Me Your Ears
$8.45 Without the influence of Charlie Parker, Art Pepper's music would have sounded completely different. (Then again, this would be true of all post-war jazz musicians.) With 1960's SMACK UP, Pepper's Parker-inspired playing is filtered through layers of time and experience, and the elder saxophonist's presence is more felt than heard on this album.
On SMACK UP, Pepper has taken "the ...
| | John Martyn Solid Air CD (1973) Import
Lend Me Your Ears
$11.65 He began as a folksy minstrel but seemed drawn to experimental, free form improvisation. Solid Air is where John Martyn's love affair with effects and echoplex became serious. The title track, dedicated to his close friend Nick Drake, became a eulogy, while the breezy "Over The Hill"--one of the greatest songs ever written about a train journey--is a feathery delight. "May You Never" and "Don't Want To Know" continued the simple, stoned ballad approach, although it is his interpretation of Skip James' "I'd Rather Be The Devil," totally reshaped with hypnotic shifts, tidal echoes, and a slurred growl, which broods over the whole album. A record that remains Martyn's youthful zenith.
CD edition of the British Folk singer/songwriter's landmark 1973 album. Solid Air has long since been considered by many to be his best album. John Martyn began as a folksy minstrel but seemed drawn to experimental, free form improvisation. ...

| | Soul Eyes: The Mal Waldron Memorial Album CD (2003)
Lend Me Your Ears
$12.65 Recorded between 1955 & 1962. Includes liner notes by Stuart Kremsky.
Mal Waldron was a remarkably versatile piano player, able to work in many different contexts, from Billie Holiday to Eric Dolphy. This ability made him invaluable as musical director for Prestige Records, where the recording dates were often little more than jam sessions. Soul Eyes: The Mal Waldron Memorial Album collects 11 tracks, recorded between 1955 and 1962, that Waldron played on and/or led, including a mammoth version of the title cut, featuring John Coltrane, Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers, and others, that clocks in at 17-plus minutes. Although all the cuts have been previously released (not always under Waldron's name), it's nice to have this overview of one of his most fertile periods. ~ Sean Westergaard

| | Eric Dolphy Iron Man CD (1963) (Import) Spain
Lend Me Your Ears
$18.85 Although this 1963 date features some of the same musicians - Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis- as the following year's OUT TO LUNCH, it's nowhere near as elegant as the celebrated Blue Note album. Some might find Eric Dolphy to be a bit forbidding--abstract and explosive in the same measure, and somewhat humorless like his mentor John Coltrane, but ...
