The Terrible Twos: Eric McCann, Dustin Than Kinsey, Bill Belzer, Matthew Pryor. Audio Mixer: Colin Mahoney. Masterminded by Matt Pryor of the New Amsterdams (and formerly of the revered emo outfit the Get Up Kids), the Terrible Twos announce their eagerly awaited arrival with this charming, child-friendly 2007 album. While the songs on IF YOU EVER SEE AN OWL are blatantly geared toward kids, they aren't cloying, winning over both young listeners and their indie-rock-inclined parents with smart acoustic arrangements. Highlights of this whimsical set include the breezy "Ladybug," the counting-oriented "Math Romp," and the jaunty "Isabella," all of which benefit from the amiable voice and playful lyrics of Pryor, who approaches the tunes with an easy-going enthusiasm that only a father can offer. As a member of the pioneering emo group the Get Up Kids, Matt Pryor has got to be one of the most obvious choices for any of his peers to release a children's album, if for the simple fact that his voice is well, perfect for one. After the Kids called it a day in 2005, Pryor turned his attention to the New Amsterdams, and it's that band's lineup that has retooled itself as the kid friendly crew, the Terrible Twos. The mission was to create music to replace the cheese their kids mostly listened to, and the group's ridiculously cute debut, If You Ever See an Owl..., is exactly the breath of fresh air that parents ready to pull their hair out at the mere thought of another hug-filled Barney song need. This is a family album in every sense, since parents will appreciate the band's easy-on-the-ears rock -- hitting relatable topics like bedtime difficulties ("Grumpy Bug") and dinnertime woes ("Pizza & Chocolate Milk") -- and the kids will love the regularly memorable hooks, occasional silly lyrics and always soothing vocals. Simple, warm acoustics and brushed percussion drive this laid-back 15-song set (clocking in at just over a manageable 30 minutes), which benefits as much from good pop songwriting as the band's ability to not sing at kids, but with them. Sure, there's time for teaching things like diversity and tolerance ("We Can All Get Along with Dinosaurs"), simple math ("Math Stomp"), and the proper way to excuse yourself (the adorable "Smickey"), but the Terrible Twos truly succeed in that they can do all of that without preaching. Everything is delivered in the form of inherently innocent, unpretentious and lighthearted songs that are really just plain fun to listen to. And even when the kids aren't around to sing along, it's very possible that If You Ever See an Owl... could stay on in the background. Children's music that's actually good and not grating? Mission accomplished. ~ Corey Apar If You Ever See An Owl Music Terrible Twos If You Ever See An Owl Songs If You Ever See An Owl Music If You Ever See An Owl Music Review Purchase If You Ever See An Owl CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Cellular DVD (2004) Widescreen; Subtitled

| | Michael Garrick Trio Moonscape CD (2007)
If You Ever See An Owl
$14.09 Michael Garrick: M. Garrick (piano); D. Green (bass guitar); C. Barnes (drums). Personnel: Michael Garrick (piano); Colin Barnes (drums). Audio Remasterer: John Brooks. Liner Note Authors: Jonny Trunk; Michael Garrick. Recording information: London, England (1964). Moonscape is the first solo offering by famed British pianist, organist, and composer Michael Garrick. Garrick, who has since worked with everyone from Joe Harriott to Neil Ardley to Ian Carr to Don Rendell, is also a man of letters and has conducted and participated in more than 2,300 concerts of jazz and poetry. This set is the true Holy Grail of modern British jazz, and thanks to famed collector and blogger Jonny Trunk of Trunk Records, is available (on both CD and vinyl) widely for the first time since it was released in an edition of 99 copies on 10" 33-rpm vinyl in 1964. This is not some flawed early attempt at being the leader of a trio -- Garrick was already one. Instead, it is a remarkable, diverse collection of six tunes (all original compositions) that pointed the way for the era of British jazzmen to come. One can hear in this set the beautifully experimental (yet playful and accessible) rhythmic pointillism that Paul Bley was messing about with around the same time in "A Face in the Crowd" (with some arco playing by bassist David Green), initially composed to accompany a poem by Jeremy Robson. The opening title track is a whispering inquiry into minor keys and the use of space. Colin Barnes' drumming is used not so much to keep a beat but to create spaces between phrases -- some of which are dissonant but not angular. But that's just the intro. What emerges is a scalar set of contingencies around three or four different shapes by Garrick. This is early vanguard Brit ...
