| | Joan Jett Flashback CD Joan Jett Discography of CDs
Although her solo career has hit many a peak and valley, Joan Jett's perseverance paid off greatly, as she became a major leading figure and inspiration for the "riot grrrl" movement of the 1990s and its main exponents, such as L7, 7 Year Bitch, and Bikini Kill. And while the 1997 best-of collection, FIT TO BE TIED, is the best place to start for the Jett newcomer, her 1994 rarities collection, FLASHBACK, isn't too shabby, either.
Jett has relied on covering other artists' songs perhaps more than any other rocker of recent times, but she has a way of putting her own unmistakable stamp on the compositions of others. She may have veered from her original direction briefly in the late-'80s, trying her hand at more mainstream fare, but FLASHBACK focuses on her raw punk side. Standouts include an early version of "I Love Rock N' Roll" recorded with ex-Sex Pistols Steve Jones and Paul Cook, as well as covers of tracks made popular by Alice Cooper ("Be My Lover") and David Bowie ("Rebel Rebel"), plus a live version of "Cherry Bomb" with L7. In many ways, FLASHBACK is a collection of Joan Jett's true greatest hits.Entertainment Weekly (12/3/93, p.76) - "...Joan Jett isn't the queen of rock and roll, she's the queen mother. Beloved and benign, she shows up with a proper uniform, three ritual chords, and a genial wave to the kingdom's subjects...she's finally ready to fast-forward...." - Rating: B Flashback Review

| | Faith Hill Fireflies CD (2005)
Flashback
$15.65 Coming after the relative commercial disappointment of 2002's pop-oriented CRY--and, not at all coincidentally, Gretchen Wilson's rise as the new Everygirl of country--Faith Hill's FIREFLIES is a blatant attempt to ditch the singer's glamourpuss image and reassert her country roots, such things having become fashionable again. This isn't a problem, however: Shania Twain-like chart pop wasn't Hill's forte, and FIREFLIES brings her back where she belongs.
The first single, "Mississippi Girl," is Hill's best song in years. A Dixie Chicks-like piece of sweet country-pop with a few bluegrass trimmings, the tune was written by country hitmaker John Rich. Rich also penned some of the other standouts here, like the laid-back "Sunshine and ...

| | Joan Jett Bad Reputation CD (1981) Remastered; Enhanced CD
Flashback
$10.55 Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig (Masterdisk, New York, New York, March 1992).
After spending the '70s as part of the influential all-girl rock group the Runaways, singer/guitarist Joan Jett launched a solo career after the band's 1979 dissolution. Although her former band's music definitely had a punk edge, ("Cherry Bomb," anyone?), Jett's debut release, 1981's BAD REPUTATION, makes clear that she had finally embraced punk rock with open arms.
Featuring a ...
| | Joan Jett Sinner CD (2006) Enhanced CD
Flashback
$10.65 Apart from the Japanese-only Naked in 2004, Joan Jett hadn't released an album of all-new material in over a decade when she released Sinner in summer 2006, an amazing gap of time considering how vital and flat-out rocking she sounds on the album. Many rockers of her age and stature might have been content to just throw out a safe and innocuous record to help fill up the merch stalls on the state fair circuit. Not Jett. Her honesty and unyielding toughness has given her enough cred to headline a major alt-rock festival in 2006, and Sinner has both those qualities and then some. Her last album, Pure and Simple, was a step away from the glossy pop/rock her career had devolved into; Sinner is a huge leap toward total honesty, earnestness, and hard rock. The record contains a couple of good-time rockers reminiscent of her glory days ("Tube Talkin'," "Turn It Around"), but even the requisite glam cover, Sweet's "A.C.D.C.," deals with sexual confusion, albeit playfully. Elsewhere Jett delves into heavy or quite ...
